saying that the engine did have 6 liters of oil in it which did not help and the air filters have never been changed in its life crumbled in my hands when I took them out.

Depends why its seized I think....

If it's seized at the back where the oil seal is and it's leaking oil that would explain it

Mines waiting for two fully recon turbos to be fitted when I can get it trailered down from Preston !

exactly as TonyB has said,

if the tub has seized due to compressor or turbine vein damage then there will be no oil leak but, if the shaft, journals or seals have caused it to seize then there is a good chance that the oil will seap, causing it to smoke.

Thats great thanks buddy. I have looked in the exhaust end of the turbo and the wheel is intact there but hard to turn by hand

Means nothing after marks response but when I bought mine it had a seized turbo and didnt smoke at all.

are they 270 bearings? with upped boost, you may well have knocked the gubbings out of true, possible bent shaft or scored journals im affraid.

either way its new tubs time:nuke:

On the Passenger side tub its common for the oil pipe to clog like an artery this starves the turbo of oil which seizes up with no smoke as it has no oil supply.Usually the only thing the owner notices is a distinct lack of power.

right perhaps i sould clarify whats going on here. remember guys my cars a non turbo ;) i have never owned a turbo car and my plan is as follows:-

i have purchased an engine with the objective to

1. teach myself how to rebuild it inc turbo rebuild if plausible (knowledge building etc)

2. depending on how well i get on with it convert my na to tt (eventually)

the engine is a sort of unknown but was smoking when removed

its currently sat in my lockup and it still has the turbos on it and i was told it could be just a smoky turbo.

when i quickly had a scan over it tonight (removed turbo elbows) i could spin the passenger side ok with no shaft play but the drivers side one was stiff to move but no scraping noises etc. just stiff to turn.

im not trusting anything on the engine so will be stripped down clean, worn/broken parts replaced etc

just to keep you in the loop.

and thanks all so far for all your advice :)

Nice project to undertake and the best of luck with it . If the engines been stood for a while the tubs do go tight sometimes as the snails corrode causing the impellers to tighten.Get the tubs re furbed anyway for peace of mind and set about making that engine good as new :cool2:

thanks jimmer. its not going to be rushed as it will be done a bit at a time due to funding

, but i have waited 5 years im sure waiting a little longer isnt going to do any harm LOL.

thanks for that little bit of advice i will check that when i take them apart ;)

i know some people say "why bother messing around , just go and buy a tt"

i say i have had my z for 5 years , i know its quirks. its a part of me and i know it inside and out. this would be the ultimate challenge for me and im not the sort of person that like to be told i can't do something. im always willing to learn if people are there to teach.

i don't know a lot but there is always trial and error

way i see it is , i have done ok so far with my z and probably reached the limits of my mods on the na engine before i spend silly money on it to chase little gains. its been fun but possibly the evil of the tt's may just be nibbling my conscience.

so back on the topic , i still may be able to salvage this turbo depending what i find when i strip it.

currently trawling through the forum looking at stock internal maximum safe HP......... feel like a newbee again !

i bought mine with, apperantly, a knackered turbo, was smoking really bad, turned out that the turbo was knackered, but only from all the debri of a hole blown in one of the pistons!

DOH! well i will see when i take the heads off. if its fubar then its fubar. for what i paid for it i could sell the ancillaries and be back in profit!

Good thread, can I spoil it by asking what is a laughable question to you fella's who know better. Could I stop my Z from smoking even if only for a while, i.e. somehow sieze the turbos until they can be replaced? Happy to lose the power if it means I can drive without causing a global hate campaign against me :)
