Catch tank, plumbing diagram. Whos got the know how?

i need to fit a catch tank, im getting lots of blow by gases when cornering on track and now that im pushing more boost i get loads when i turn it up. at 17 psi its fine though.

Whos fitted one? i know there has been some talk about re routing the pcv system, im not going this route, maybe when i next have the plenum off i could do, but for now im going to fit a catch tank.

Can someone also mention what size and how many take offs it needs

Thanks

James.

If your leaving the pcv side of things alone then your going to need to plumb it into the pipework that goes from each turbo intake pipe to the front top of the rockers, good news is you have one each side that you need to break into, these allow excess gas to be shoved back into the intake air while your on boost and the pcv valves are closed, don't know the size of these pipes yet but I'm doing mine soon so if they come up on this thread that would be handy

Well il be using braided hose and which ever size joiners i need. So both turbo intake sides T into one then into the tank and back out and into the pcv again. Am i right?

why would you want to flow oilly blow by gasses throught your turbos???

also, why do you want to keep your PCV's? if you're tracking it, get rid of the pcv's and only feed clean air into your intake.

it's best to vent to atmos

I was hoping you would pop up mark, if its not too much hassle can you draw up a diagram for me as to how you plumbed it in.

one other thing, i see you have a small filter vented to atmosphere, doesnt this release crank pressure? Is this correct? i thought you had to retain some pressure or am i way off?

So i should purchase a tank with a vent then?

i take it you mean the filter on top of the tank and not the cold start filter?

the plumbing is quite straight forward...

blank one of the two breathers off that are on the passanger exhaust rocker, feed the open breather straight to the tank.

at the front of the engine on the intake rocker breathers, connect and route hose to the back of the engine, linking them together with a "T" peice, this then goes straight to the tank. either block off or replace the PCV's with grub screws and you're done.

this will not affect oil pressure and you will find that the engine will run a hell of alot smoother due to only having clean air pushing through the intake.

the cab will smell slightly but, thats all part and parcel of having a track car.

Standard system takes clean air before the tubs passes it through the engine and feeds it back through the pcv valves, if your feeding the off takes from the rear into catch can instead of back into plenum your going to have to blank off the front top ones if your wanting to negate the whole pass through system.

Your also going to have no way too purge the engine of harmful gasses which Nissan deemed would be bad for oil seals etc bla bla bla.

I have run it both ways, it smoked less with pcv's working, but not having any burnt gasses getting back into the intake is a lot cleaner

Thanks thats a great help mark, i might give you a call soon though lol. Just so i get things right :D

cheers

thats probably the best PCV mod there is but, it doesnt solve the problem of spent blow by gasses running through the intake which i'm not keen on IMO :)

You dont fancy making up a paintshop diagram of how you set yours up do tou mark :D please?

Should this help reduce the risk of blowing out seals?

i'll go get my easle out now :D

the reason for me fitting the catch tank was that my rear seal kept leaking, since the tank has been fitted, no leaks from seal.

Thats perfect thanks Mark :D So i blank off both pcv obviosly. why are all the breather pipes T'd into both pipes, is that right?

Mark, like many others, I have done the mod with the PCV's plumbed into the top of the cam covers which is fine - but I assume this still effects the seals [can make them leak] in the same way right?

Is it possible to add a catchtank with that mod in place as well? And if so can you get your easel out again and have another bash at a diagram sir ;-)) That would be fab!

The Mod I refer to is the one in Lymon's link above... Can we add a catchtank to that?

Jimmy - this will drive you mad cos I think your catch can will fill up pretty quickly - and you will end up emptying it 8 times and then you will become paranoid. I have read that some folks allow the catch tank to drain back into the engine via the dipstick neck - so that could be a quick fix for track day. Just make sure your catch tank is located lower than the cam cover and higher than the dipstick neck then it maybe a simple case of sticking a length of silicon on the catch tank drain, and at the track, pulling the dipstick and pushing the silicon either over or inside the dipstick hole!

Not sure if that helps - just my thoughts...

Hey mark, i have bought all the bits i need for this mod. I just want to clarify that this mod is ok?

Have you had any problems since the bottom end failure with anything regarding this catch tank?

Do i have the option of having it vent to atmosphere or just plugging it up instead? Is it safe and does it run ok vented?

Cheers mark.

Hang on - didn't Silverbullet throw a conrod/blow his engine at Silverstone?!?!?!?!

I think he confirmed he thought it was due to oil starvation so...

...You still want to do the same mod?

Or have I missed something?

  • Author

Yeah thats why im posting this up again lol

Im hoping he didnt reduce pressure enough to cause starvation.....

That's a very good point!

That's a very good point!

it wasn't the crankcase pressure that was the problem, it was the vast quantity of oil sitting in the catch tank leaving very little in the sump ...

Castle coombe is pretty much all right hand bends and using the stock pcv area on left side of the engine for the catchtank pick up was just sloshing oil into the tank.

I had a word with Mark today and he did mention this. I will set mine up the same but i will make sure the hoses come out of the rockers higher than the catch tank. Im also thinking about keeping the stock pcv restrictors in place, might help.

Personally, I'd relocate the PCV system to the top of the rocker covers and see how that helps before bothering with a catch tank.

If it aint broke Jimmy dont mend it,the thrapping your cars had on circuits and its been fine, leave it alone if its ok.its not some performance mod that proves your running more power. It reminds me of people automatically fitting an adjustable fuel pressure regulator just because they are running more power on a higher flow rate injector when most of the time its not needed.
