I heard on here that you can remove at least one of the tubs with out removing the engine from the car? anyone know what side this is?

And do you have to remove the whole engine or just raise it enough to get at the tubs?

I might have to give him a ring, find out how he does the drivers side, typical that's the one I'm going to need to get at lol.

Yep, its possble to replace both with engine in. Passenger side is definatly easier though. But its much easier and can be quicker just to pull engine.

An experienced Z mechanics can pull engine in a couple of hours...and at least with the engine out its a very simple job to replace tubs and you can be sure you have every oil and water feed and return plumbed in securely.

This is true. anyone know what the deal is on getting a car through MOT with a smoky turbo? can the waist gate be closed and stop it smoking, just so i can get Tax on the car?

My turbos have smoked since I've had the car (3 years) mainly when cold at tick over, always passes the MOT ok though, I don't think they can fail on a bit of smoke, or maybe my tester is lenient lol.

They can, but i think it boils down to whether those behind can see the back of your car when its doing it lol

big advantage to leaving the engine in is that you do not disturb anything else, mainly the loom as, as soon as you start removing the engine you will break connectors etc.. on the brittle loom. if your on a budget it is better to do the tubs with the engine in.

Think i'd rather have a few broken connectors that a blind man and his deaf daughter on benefits can repair than "possibly" inadequate plumbed in tubs or tightend nuts/bolts!

correct mate the connectors are easy, but alot of zeds looms get brittle due to the heat, but i guess if you have been doing them for over 20 years you get used to making sure all is plumbed in and tight, i bought a breaker last year for a manual conversion and that had had its turbos done with the engine out and things were not all connected properly on that one and there was photographs of the job being done , so i guess even with the engine out things can get missed.

It's easier and cheaper to fit a new loom than it is to have to refit or replace the turbos if things aren't refitted correctly. I'd rather have a loom that needed replacing thanks!

Yup, I'd rather the engine were taken out for tub replacement too.

Me too - like it's been said above, a decent Z mechanic can pull an engine in no time!! Plus it's a good opportunity to replace those "hard to get at" items that otherwise don't cost much but may go bad in the near future. EG rear crank oil seal; rear heater hoses etc etc. And you can inspect the clutch for wear too......

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Well either way i dont mind, but if it means i can do a proper job rather than some half ass-ed attempt, i dont mind taking the engine out to do it. so that looks like its going to be the way forward. cant see it being that much different to when i did the N/A ill just drop the gear box out from under it again, and just hoist the engine. do i need to remove it fully from the car or just enough to get at the tubs. good thing is I've taken the connectors off the engine on a N/A so know how temperamental they can be.

well if i take off the coffee breaks, the waiting on getting new tools, and the time it took me to get the car in the air, id say i can pull an engine in around 8 hours, then how ever long it takes to get the tubs off, and refitting seems to be a lot faster, did most of the work with in 4 hours getting all the connections back in place. only thing that put everything on hold with the N/A was my tools getting stolen halfway through with a gear box out. and that bloody spigot bearing for the engine.

I havnt posted much of late as iv been so very busy since my bussiness partner left the garage. It's not that I havnt been bothered as yassa has been keepinge up to date with things and I have been to the z monthly meet.

As for the turbos it's no problem doing both turbos on car. Any good z mechanic can easyly carry out this repair fully. I have done this repair many times and I'm sure non of mine have ever fallen off or leaked water etc. Infact I'm sure vjays turbos are still on his car and I fitted them way back in2000. :)

I'd rather he left his little probe well away from my holes tbh

I'm sure the service manual lists the process for removing both turbo's with engine in situe, having replaced tubs on mine several times now with engine out I would not like to think I had to do it with it in place

I don't think the problem is getting them out so much as making sure everything is dine up properly once they are refitted
