Hi guys.

I know its a ford, but where else do i get to ask guys that know what they are talking about?

Anyhow, its a focus diesel near me+ the girlie loves it .I think its best if i just quote the advert

STARTS AND DRIVES BUT HAS A KNOCKING NOISE FROM THE ENGINE I HAVE BEEN TOLD ITS A FUELING PROBLEM AND THE KNOCKING IS DIESEL KNOCK, IT SEEMS TO BE OVER FUELING AS DIESEL SMOKE COMES OUT THE EXHAUST WHEN IT STARTS.

Any ideas? common faults? what to check? i have my on idea whats up, but i could use some help... :boat:

if it is diesel knock u need to find out when it started as if its been a while then it may have cause piston dammage scoring etc, then need to find out what changes were made for it to start knocking eg have any injectores been removed replaced etc, common find is that injectors re-installed incorectly, or timming is out?? but if left unsorted & driven it can melt the pistons so beware!!

No-one seems to know what happened to it, as its a p/x .

The knock is so seriously loud when cold, you couldn't shout over it.

So does that mean there is no way it could of started doing it on its own?, without being caused by a mechanic? i was worried about the pump being faulty...is it obvious to look at if an injector is not in correctly?

check the pump timing....iff the belt has slipped a tooth or two then it sounds like hammers. happend to me on a transit

If its diesel knock and NOT common rail, undo each fuel pipe in turn with it running till the knock stops,if it doesnt then it may be the pump or timing. If it starts good then it prolly isnt timing. It wont be because an injector is in wrong, they will only go in one way,if it was leaking past the injector it will make a chuffing sound as air is forced out.

Cheers. Being dense ,Does that mean that as if cracking the injectors shuts it up, it has a dead injector??? + will be a cheap fix??

mmmmm, this may be related, maybe not, but diesel now contains 5% bio-diesel, thats a maximum,(so far!) and most if not all producers now add it.I was literally under the bonnet last week with a garage owner who has a fleet of Vauxhall diesels, all newish, seems to be having same probs of late as bigsimon, he believes his probs are due to the fuel, luckily he has his own kit and sets timming up, new fuel pumps(they seem to wear out faster now)and defo new fuel filters, then alls ok for about 7-10k then same again, costing him a shed loads in consumables, he first realised a problem with fuel filter clogging up with some type of grey/black gunk, then cars smoking and knocking bad when cold, some vehicles were down on power too.

Reminds me a bit of Shell and there bog ups, off loading the UK with experimental Optimax,(the stuff abroad was different and better!) caused probs over here i remember till problem sorted(they denied it for a long time)
