The paint job on my recently sprayed spoiler has cracked with the freezing weather leaving a mess at both ends of the spoiler. I have stripped the paint back with wet and dry and this has taken off the black paint leaving a sort of white primer, funnily enough there is no primer where the paint had lifted. I intend to take off the primer with more rubbing down and then treat the rubber with some sort of silicone treatment. Has anyone used such a method and what to use to seal the edges of the spoiler which have lifted.

I appreciate that I could replace it with the f/glass unit but the original seems ok.

Its absorbed so much moisture over the years, it will just continue to crack the paint as it expands and contracts.

Just throw it away. whatever you do to it now the result will be the same next winter. IMO

Yep , get rid and get a glass copy :thumbup1:

Yeah i will sort somthing out once the mould is done.

There will also soon be a JP-Z spoiler available

My spoiler was mint too before this winter... now its cracked at the ends. Not sure what to do really, so many options :(

replace with a fibreglass spoiler.

As above mate - you're wasting time and money trying to repair the one you have on the car now.

I should know - I did the repair thing with my first ZX when I bought it (I hadn't discovered this 'site back then). Needless to say I had to buy a fibre glass replica not log afterwards and have that painted and fitted!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Or make your own !

Got a hold of an old mould from John300zx.

It was a wee bit out of shape, so strenghtened it with a piece of hardwood.

2 layers of Gelcoat, 2 layers of fine sheen matting, several layers of 14oz matting and it popped out like this !

Rip off the old spoiler, which was easier than I had read about, its like this.

Wee bit of manipulation and the new spoiler bonded on with Sikaflex.

I then choose to cut the corners off and fit a mid-level spoiler, but I am weird !!

Quick coat of colour later.

Alan..................

True.

Made three spoilers from it, but it is showing signs of wear.

Glass and stuff aint my bag mate, just a sort of by-product of a decent apprenticeship. I like trying and finding out.

Use F/Glass a fair bit at work and thought to meself, I would like to try that, so had a go !! All praise to the professionalls, as the final finish speaks volumes !

Alan...........

looks really really good.

I have bought alot of crap off traders that are surpose to be top notch :ban:

Managed to remove all of the paint by using flap wheel in a drill right down to the rubber. I can now see the original problem with the material used. Because the paint is black I have saved cash by rubbing down the rubber and treating with" back to black",sealing the top edge with black silicone and hey presto looks half decent and no longer soaks up water.

RESULT.
