I know what you mean, the amount of time wasters i have had on my pistonheads ad is unbelevable :(

My rather naive nephew got scammed from an autotrader ad to sum of £800, I wish he'd told me about it before he agreed to send the money by money gram grrrrr.

I think autotrader has gone extremely down hill. Very annoying with all the adds from arnold clark on it aswell i think.

I find the fact that people put one price down, then when you read the details it says real price .... Why dont they just say that in the first place.

Gumtree is just the same, i have had this email 5 times now.

Not from cheapys, they were all in normal price ranges...

The car is at my military unit in Glasgow. I can't make it home till another 2 weeks when I'll be on leave for a few days. If you want you can meet me in Glasgow for pick up or I can deliver it to your address if you would then escort me to your nearest train station. If you are 100% certain you want to buy it email me back with a contact number for me to call you.

Thanks,

Gavril.

I've had the same crap from a guy who is supposed to be in Cadiz. I then claim to be in Cadiz working and try and arrange a viewing. Never get one though - strange.

The other thing that annoys me about AT is you search price low to high then at the beginning of your search you get loads of premium ads!!!!

did you read about the woman that got scammed this way?.. she sees an advert for a car for sale she likes (iirc it was a mk5 golf), phones up and asks to view. he asks where shes travelling from to give directions and says 'youre only round the corner from me, il bring it round'... this suited her as she was a busy person. he took it round, she liked it and paid him there and then. a few days later the car is gone! he had a spare key and just took the fooker back... it had cloned plates on it so was then untraceable.

I've been on it a few times lately, i've also found its one of the worlds sloooowest sites. Proberly due to all the 3rd party ads etc...on there :(

that`s because for vehicle priced under £1000 it`s cheaper than for those cars over £1000. Very anoying....

Personally i think AT should make anyone that lists their car at that price sell it for that price or remove the ad :)

How does that scam work? Do they just ask for a deposit?

The way my nephew was scammed was that he saw a nice ford focus for £800 retail was around £1200-£1500, guy had the excuse that he'd driven it to germany and needed to sell it as right hand drive was no good in germany.

So he gets some pictures and a nice back story, agrees to buy it, he gets a vehicle shipping number, and a website to log into and track the progress. He sent the money via monerygram which states in big letters on the website "do not send money to people you don't know". The tracking website is fake, all the contact details are fake. Bang he's £800 out of pocket.
