Cant boost past 17-18psi, causes?! expert opinoins plz jimmer? legrath? jeff? smithy?

Ok i thought i would start a new thread as my recirc thread has become a bit long.

Right basically i cant boost past 17-18psi it will hit 17-18psi then drop down to 14 or so..... its not the ebc as ive had the actuator pipes off and it still wont boost past the above pressure. fyi i dont have the stock actuator solenoids anymore.

the ebc does make a difference, if set to 0% it will boost a steady 10-11 psi

on 100% of course it will on boost to 17to18psi depending on gear... anyway this is irrelevant seen as ive had the actuator pipes off.

i have ditched the recircs hoping they were leaking, I fitted a single Bov which dumps nicely with no leaks.... This has not cured the problem.

The car idles nicely so im pretty sure there are no boost leaks(i have tested for these!) these would be pretty obvious if they were the problem. Im going to do another boost leak test 2mow and test it at 18 psi to see what happens.

Can anyone suggest any possible causes or tests i could perform to resolve this its getting annoying now and holding me back from my remap......

Thanks in advance.....

You have fitted a balance bar where the recircs were?

The plenum switches over and feeds the opposite bank is what I was referring to not the balance bar.

Where the recircs were i have T'ed both sides together with a BOV in the middle, you wanna see a pic?

Anyway do you have any input on my boosting probs mark? :D

What have you set you BOV to, how much can it release, and have you had your chip custom mapped yet?

I wasn't doubting the quality of your work Jimmy, just interested in what you have done?

The bov is set as it was from factory, i havent changed the spring tension, it starts to dump just over 1psi and can hold upto 60psi, havent had the chip custom mapped yet as i need to sort out this boosting problem before i can do so, next is to adjust the actuators so they are just starting to open at 15psi.

heres the pipework, pretty basic really, DSC01115.jpg

your best bet would be take it to the rolling road.you seem to have spent a lot of money so why not spend a few more quid and let the pro`s do the work imo

The problem is it will be a waste of time getting it tuned up if it wont boost where i want it, they could spend hours trying to work on it when i can do it myself.

Il get it sorted eventually ;)

this sounds familiar. Only i got to the rolling road and JD spent some time on it before concluding that it was my actuators. He didnt charge the earth though. thank god. And like he said earlier in the thread, its the springs on my GT28RS's that cant hold the boost. So mine was reaching 18psi and falling to 14 just like yours. Dont think mine are ajustable though and havent get round to uprating them, baffles me why they would spec a turbo rated to run 20psi with such weak springs.

Good luck with it mate and let us know.

Cheers

i havent had time to work on the car recently but im prety sure its the actuators, i tested each side and one opens at 14psi the other at about 10psi so they are unbalanced. Will only take a an hour or so to sort it, lets just hope nothing else goes wrong hhaha, oh and cheers for the concern guys :D

Ok another update.

I set the actuators to 16 psi (ish) went for a drive and hey presto it now peaks at 19.4 psi, soooooooo i got back home and set them a little higher. I Can now peak at 21.6psi which was my highest recorded pressure. (Albeit sideways, struggling for traction in 4th gear lol)

Im thinking... why do my actuators have to be set so high in order to hit this pressure? surely there is something else wrong or maybe the hks actuator springs just cant hold the exhaust pressure to well?

Im thinking of setting them even higher so i have more range as hitting 21 psi requires the ebc to be set at 100% which isnt very practicle when setting my desired pressure.

There is not alot more adjustment left on the drivers side actuator and i have kinda screwed up the ending of the thread turning it with long nose plyers, (at least it worked).

So il give it another go on the weekend and see how it goes.

Can anyone add anything to this thread?

:gun_bandana:

yeah.....dont use long nose pliers lol sorry !

Yeah your right, i should of removed the engine first then used my fingers to turn the actuator rod, my bad ;) Its such a pain that the drivers side actator is so hrad to get to.
