The moment you turn the ignition to on the fuel pump pressurises the system. You can hear it if you turn on the ignition with the door open. It takes a second or two. Maybe it's something else going wrong? Mine starts instantly unless its been unused for weeks and weeks then it might churn a bit before catching.

If your car has learning difficulties put it in a special class at school lol, sorry could not resist it.

This is every time i start it will take about 10-20 seconds of turning over will i be able to hear the fuel pump in the boot? Then sometimes she will fire instantly but only rarely.

Can you smell fuel under the bonnet? I had that problem, turned out to be a leak on one of the fuel pipes on top of the plenum, easy fix, as the fuel pump was priming the system, it was leaking out and losing pressure, just a thought matey...

hi mate ive had the same problem recently but since ive done a complete oil change its starting better, oh and ive changed the ptu to a series 2 this also might have something to do with it..have you checked your plugs also..

if you have a s1 ptu it could be that. if not, fuel leaks around the plenum are very common.

yep got a s1 ptu would that not cause running problems as well if it was faulty? Ill check for fuel leaks in the light tomorrow

Maybe your starter is on it's way out. Would have thought if it was fuel, plugs, afm etc that the car wouldn't run well. It's an odd one..

might sound daft but have you tried cleaning the water temp sensor? if it thinks its hot it wouldnt run enrichment map to cold start,

might be another place to try.

had this problem on my daily driver , replaced the water temp sensor and it starts on the button every time now

Just ordered a new temp sensor ive got no idea how long that one has been in there so i thought i would be safe will see if that cures it. :)

Had a look today and found a fuel leak on the low pressure side just under the balance pipe so sorted that but still takes ages to start. Waiting on new temp sensor coming and will see if that cures it however my mpg might be a little bit better now :)

New temp sensor fitted and still taking ages to start there must be a fuel leak somewhere on the low pressure side im gonna have the throttle cover off and have more of a look this afternoon but where are the prone to leaking spots? Is it all under the bonnet area

Ok had a look and ive got no more fuel leaks in the engine bay so im kinda thinking that the electric pump is knackered. Should i be able to hear it whirring in the boot with just the ignition on and anymore thoughts on what it could be. Cheers

as soon as you turn on the ignition you will here a zzzzzzz for about 2 secs then it will go off :)

Ah right yes im getting that then. What about pressure regulator will that cause lack of fuel pressure at start up? It just feels like the fuel is getting dragged from the tank before the engine fires.

Not necessarily connected but when I had my variable fuel pressure Reg fitted I noticed that it would take a couple of extra secs to start. Usedto start immediately but now takes a couple of secs so I guess the Reg could cause slow starting...

still think its your ptu mate sorted mines out,

when i was trying to start it ,it would just turn and turn and i had to pump the accelerator a couple of times and you could hear it trying to start then it would start probably about 15 to 20 secs, if yours is the same then try the ptu..

Yes that sounds just like mine any way to test to make sure. However i think it may be time to get a s2 ptu.

How does it start when the engine is warm ?

If it then also is hard to start, then do a compression test on the engine first..

hard/long starts is a classic sign of low compression.

Sometimes its fine and starts within a few cranks but most the time its hard to start at cold and warm but easier when its warmed up. Ill get a compression tester and check the results.
