about redline heavy shockproof oil! it supposed to help to stop shearing teeth on the gears but would it also help with potential grind on syncro?

thinking of using this stuff in my next box as you know these old non turbos are well torquey:thumbup: and tend to shear syncro teeth **whistles and walks away***

Im going to use Gulf Gear TX. Its a little thinner at 75W-80.

This will mean shifting from cold will be easier and quicker.

Its a good quality product that will still protect the teeth and bearing too under harsh use.

Just got this from Guy at Opie oils. Good price too!!

cheers pete. i was running silkolene SILKTRAN SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil in my last box but as you know i have sheered 6 teeth off of my first gear syncro. so wanted something a little more "protective"

will have a word with guy to see what he thinks of the gulf stuff for my gearbox

There has been talk on driftworks of slightly overfilling the box, which reduces starvation when oil surge occurs.

You could try using this stuff:

I used to work for Forte & their products are quite good trade products. :thumbup1:

thats an additive for normal oil yes? thanks for the info paul:)

Yup, just add it to the oil you are using.

If you want to play around with the Shockproof go for the lightweight shock, not the heavy shock as this is just too thick.

Cheers

Guy

I wouldn't say Redline MT90 is the preferred choice for normal use.....normally only used when boxes are experiencing worn syncro noise. Shockproof is supposed to be even better for that though.

overfilling would be tricky, due to the fill hole location. You would have to undo the bellhousing bolts, twist the box so the fill hole is at the top, then put extra in, before twisting back the right way and bolting back up.

would putting the car on ramps on one side be enough tilt to get extra in without all the above hassle...done this to my cabstar and managed about an extra pint of oil:thumbup1: but it does weep a little but a lot less noise

Was having a think about the difficulty of overfilling and was considering a very thin tube and syringe, I know the internal diameter of the breather pipe is small so not sure if it is viable!

there's no use in overfilling it....

the gearbox will start leaking from the back/propshaft

Yup, just add it to the oil you are using.

And it will probably make the oil even thicker.

Which is exactly what you dont want.

>> Have you given it a go Eric?

yes and didn't work apart from gearbox oil all over the exhaust :D

Thats what i was going to say, The oil is pretty thick so once you see it weeping out give it another good squirt then as quick as you can put the bung back in..... I use a small syringe pump with a long tube to get mine in.... The tube is quite fat so it blocks the opening stopping oil from coming out, if you can find a perfect tube with the same OD as the filler hole then your onto a winner.

But anyway it did start to seep out the propshaft end anyway so doresnt work really...
