bad news.

stripped down the front of the zed today as i was taking the engine out for a clean up and a manual conversion along with a bit of winter overhaul.

unfortunatly the slight ding i thought it had turns out to be a bent chassis leg:crying:

i now am forced with the task of replacing the chassis leg from a breaker or reshelling the car.

this is so frustrating just as i have got the car running well and was about to do all the finishing touches to make it run perfectly.

gutted

Slight ding ?? the chassis legs at the front of these cars are sturdy and the metal used for the inner wing panels which are welded to the leg is thicker than most and thus to bend the leg takes more than a 'slight ding'. What did you hit ?

it wernt me.

the car was hpi clear and had been quite well bodged on the surface to look fine.

you cant really see the chassis rails without it stripped down.

i guess the previous owner crashed it into something (i think smithy mentioned this) and had a dodgy garage repair it instead of going through insurance.

i dont think i can drive it now i know.

ive spent alot of time and money getting it this far and now the shell is basically scrap

should i reshell or fix my shell?

or just sell it all.

IMHO - I would sell it - start again matey..

Very sad to hear your news man... Feel for you.

Can you not get it pulled staight on a dozer. or a proper jig???

IMO that will be easier/cheaper than re shelling.

My slicktop project car which is now nearing completion started out as a quite badly bent shell

Any decent bodyshop with a good Jigging system should be able to sort it out bud .

There are a few types , a bracket system which the garage have to hire a set of brackets for that particular make and model of car , ie Cellette and Car Bench or one with a measuring system which should be the cheaper option as there,s no bracket hire , ie Blackhawk Korek , Car-o-liner , Globel amongst others.

It,s alot less work getting it straightened than re-shelling IMO as long as the person jigging it does it right . HTH :punk:

well i spoke to jeff today and he has assured me that it will be perfectly ok to cut out the old leg and put on a replacement from a donor. Im perfectly happy to do this sort of work so all should be fine

infact he said nissan still sell new chassis legs for just this purpose:biggrin:

Bring on the angle grinder

That's good news mate - as said above; if you can fix yours then it's a whole lot easier/cheaper than re-shelling.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Don't give up mate it will be worth it in the end :D. Mine's been off the road 18 months (new girlfriend, new baby :D, short hours at work etc), but i'm nearly there :hyper:

But it will still need to be done on a jig with measuring facilities. Or you might end up with the new leg out of line with the rest. If the chassis leg is visually bent then the shell may be bent elsewhere not readily visible.

A quick DIY cut N shut wont neccessarily fix it.
