Dan @ DTA reckons he can get some complete Apexi induction kits from a supplier, but as they are in serious short supply they are quite expensive.

My question is how easy/hard are they to fit, or how much would it cost to get someone to fit one?

I need to do my sums you see, i want the Apexi kit - but christmas round the corner etc

Thanks in advance

bad spelling

You don't need a mechanic mate, you can deffo do it yourself, trust me ;)

smithy

its very very easy to fit!

4 screws!

never seen the standard airbox, but whatever it is its easy to access, probably a 1/10 job to do :)

as for the price, just get a second hand one from ebay or driftworks, always some lurking around

^^^ what he said! :)

BUT... lol... if you have the standard air box in there at the mo, its a bit of a bugger to get out, but not so bad if you are chucking it afterwards as you can be a bit rougher with it lol. Highly recommended set up. ;)

Yup - if you're binning the air box, just remove the top cover (under the headlight panel); remove the retaining bolts/screws and bend the bottom bit in half. It comes out much easier that way!

Could you enlighten us - how "expensive" is " quite expensive" ?:nana2:

I never understand why Nissan would go to all the trouble of manufacturing an air box as complicated as it is if a replacement such as the Apexi or similar is better since it would clearly be cheaper and easier to fit/manufacture etc such a filter than the oem part

So are they really better ? Is it all a big con ? If it was all about engine strangulation to control power output/emissions surely that would be more than easy enough through the engine management system/electronics ?

Well he said that the last ones he got were sold for £87 but that was just for the cone bit i think - Whereas these have been advertised as full induction kit and include 2 brackets.

These are rrp of £125 plus postage.

I wanted to know about fitting cos if i had to get someone else to it then its going to be upwards of £150 and i am pretty poor at the moment, but i do want to replace my standard one.

If the filter is specific for the Z32 - it will just bolt straight to the AFM (air flow meter) so no brackets required. (~unless its for support, but why is beyond me as it doesnt need it)

Look at this pic -

4 of the threaded holes in the back of the filter line up with those on the AFM, you should get a gasket with the filter too.

As with most OEM items, they are a compromise between performance, noise, emissions, economy etc. The ZX needs a lot of air to feed each bank - especially in twin turbo guise; hence it needed the 2 panel filters to give sufficient surface area to maintain flow. To squeeze 2 flat rectangles in there required some complex fiddling!!

The Apexi (along with K&N et al) provide better flow of cooler as there is no longer any air box to restrict it; hence "can" offer slight gains in performance. But at the cost of increased noise (not that we'd care), although I doubt emissions or economy would falter by much. In the main though, the 'filter upgrade enhances other mods like a freeflow exhaust and/or chip; as opposed to a stand alone performance modification.

I do understand your point about why manufacturers bother with the full air-box thing though; it's probably down to various governments' rulings on safety or something.....

Don't expect the induction roar that you get on V6 vectras and chavvy corsas etc, doesn't happen with a Z ;)

OK - just a bit of an explanation here (it's long but bear with me):

First of all, INSTALLATION:

All our A'PEXi kits come with full Z32 specific instructions that I personally drafted when doing the conversion on my own car some years ago. Removing the stock air box can be a bit of a pain due to location of a couple of bolts but as you're binning the box you can also use a small hacksaw. Removal should take no more than 10 minutes if you're doing it the "neat" way. Installing the cone filter is a matter of 2 minutes as the filter bolts straight onto the air flow meter (bolts are supplied in our kit).

Secondly, a description of the standard A'PEXi "filter head only" kit and their "full" induction kit:

A'PEXi produced two kits for the Z32 - the first (and cheapest @ £87) is the so-called "filter head only" kit. This kit comprises of one filter head, paper gasket and four bolts. This is the kit that was most widely sold all over the globe. The second kit (aka "full induction kit") they produced included (in addition to the above parts) a set of metal brackets that secure the filter head in place and also held the plastic splash guard in position to prevent the filter from getting wet. This kit is much more expensive (£125).

Thirdly, the situation with A'PEXi and the SHORTAGE of kits:

A year and a half ago, APEXi was declared bankrupt and was subsequently bought by another company. Then earlier this year the new company started to change the way their distributors/resellers could place orders. Minimum order quantities were raised to $5,000 and delivery schedules were extended. This made it extremely difficult for distributors to do business and as a result global stock levels of AVC-R's, Induction Kits, etc started to decline. A couple of months ago stock levels of the filter head only kits reached critical levels and at this moment there are none left anywhere. The full induction kit is rapidly going in the same direction and is becoming extremely difficult to get hold of.

I have managed to secure a total of 4 "full induction kits" via a supplier of mine. These kits are currently not yet in the UK. I have seen these kits exchange hands at ludicrous prices (£200 and upwards) in recent weeks so I am extremely pleased to have access to these four kits. After paying for the import duty/VAT and shipping fees, I will be able to offer these four kits to members of this Club at a reasonable £125.00 (P+P = £9.00). One kit is already spoken for so three remain up for grabs.

These kits are likely to be the last ones I will be able to get hold of for a considerable amount of time so if you want one then I suggest you grab this deal whilst it is still available.

Ebay: I too have seen a number of these A'PEXi kits come up on ebay. Please beware that the majority of these will NOT fit the Z32 as they are most likely "Universal" Nissan fit. The bolt pattern on these is not correct for the Z32 so don't waste your money on them. There are also a number of very good "fakes" floating around. The way to tell them apart is to look at the bolt holes at the base of the filter head. If they are gold coloured then it's a genuine A'PEXi filter, if they are silver or even black in colour then stay well clear.

I hope the above has explained a few things. If anyone wants to discuss this further then please get in touch with me.

All the best,
