Just thought I'd run this one past you lot and see what your thoughts are......

I was sat here this afternoon at home when I received a phone call......

Now the caller called me by name and introduced himself and the company who he worked for, and explained that they were a debt Management company, and in the current climate.....the Government is trying to help people.... etc, etc, etc! Would I be of need of their services? Well basically I'm not, but I was curious as to where he'd obtained my name and phone number, as well as my address, as I'd not given it to anyone like that recently. He explained that it was on a list of people who might be in that sort of position  I said thank you, but no thanks and that ended the conversation without any problems. Now I had enquired about a loan at the beginning of the year, but decided not to go ahead with it, so that's the only thing I could think of.

About 20 minutes later I received another phone call from a woman this time, who again already knew my name, phone number and address, and was also asking if I was in need of the same sort of thing, but this was a different company name! This time she stated that I had two credit cards and a store card!

When I asked her how the hell she had all my details she became defensive, trying to state that they were on a 'List' again, and would I be interested, and tried to point out the merits of her company, at which point I stopped her and became quite annoyed that they had my financial details like this  Now before I could get her to repeat her name and company again she just hung-up on me (number withheld on 1471)

Now my question is how the bloody hell can anyone have my details like this? and, as I don't have either of the company details, how can I check it out?

Anyone know anything to help?

TIA

Dave

complain to the ICO bud (google it)

it wasnt me calling either unless you want a third debt manager on the phone :D

Im afraid you cant do anything at all, its a loophole in the law. Both of the companies are normally the same company or lead generating business. The first call is dealt with in the UK but routed abroad so it does not have to comply with any UK laws. These first calls are generally automated using a dialer system and then if you press a key they put you through to a handler who gets paid a commision on getting your personal details. They know you have absolutely no way to get to them. They will lie to you about what company they are, they will tell you all sorts of porkies to get your information. If you ask them anything tricky they just hang up or tell you to Foxtrot oscar.

They then sell the lead to the second company (or get another department in the same company) who calls you up, IF you can ever get real details from them this is your only point of complaint. But generally they just get more information then sell your details to another company for big money. At that point you will be hounded for all time as you end up on a "sucker list" for services.

BT cant do anything as if a number is witheld they dont have any obligation to tell you the company. They offer a service to you that costs YOU £6 a month not to accept calls from witheld numbers!.

Someone needs to take these cretins to task for operating like this as it sucks, and causes a lot of people misery and they get pestered frequently after that. The feckers call me at home all the time, im ex directory, on the telephone preference list, and have never given my home number to anyone. I have tried so many times to catch these guys out and get their real details so I can cause all sorts of trouble. The only satisfaction I have been able to get is say I am interested and say my name is "Wayne King" . When they call back I say Oh let me get this right you are after a wayneking. And call them a muppet a few times till they hang up.

Thanks for the responses guys, it's appreciated

change your phone number dave and just give it to family and friends then get your self a cheap pay as you go phone and sim, just use this mobile number for anything official like credit or store cards..never give your details to things like phone quiz's or competitions or surveys as this is the start of the information matrix mate and its all down hill from there...hth;)

they wont be overseas as they were offering claims management of consumer credit so will have to ministry of justice license holders. Next time they call ask them for their MOJ licence num then complain to MOJ and ICO

debt advisors like me who debt do debt adjustment and counselling cant cold call at all and we are closly watched by OFT so i'm pretty certain it was claims handlers who rang you, that sector is running like the wild west right now.

Cheers

chris
