OK how can you tell if you have HIDs or not, and where would be the most likely place to put the ballast. as im not sure if i have them or not, i have xenon bulbs in which leads me to believe that i have them, but not too sure.

Do you have aftermarket wires coming out of the back of the headlight (straight off the bulbs). If not you don't have HIDs.

HTH :)

Just turn them on with the engine off and listen for the ballasts. High pitched electronic whistle.

Well that confirms it then, thanks zx-eyes and Si, looks like another upgrade for me car then lol

and you can actually see at night lol

i dont tend to have any issues with mine , is it a cheap mod then this

DTA sells the kit for under £100, and if you do go HID's then get the 6k ones i do believe.

An easy mod, not necessarily cheap, but well worth the difference in visibility at night.

No But, but if you go higher, the light tends to look bluey, 6K is usually recommended as the best to get

agree

I bought a pair of HID kits from HID4U.co.uk. I have two kits fitted to two of my cars and have had them for 3 years now. I used the 6K kit and have never had any problems ever. recomended.

How do you connect them? would this be a safer bet to sort out my headlight issue or would i still need to trace that problem down first?

See pics for example of problem

Passenger side is fine and work how they should.

Drivers side how ever, get power but don't light up as much as it should, looks like its on a dimmer switch.

Im still none the wiser about this as im yet to check the fuses down near the warp-drive pedal.

Would this be a symptom of a blown fuse on the 300zx?

**EDIT** thats a magnetic rubber based, dish in the second photo by the way lol

DTA and ask Danny bud about your needs..when you recieve the kit its all plug and play with easy to read instructions

no, you will still have the problem, possibly worse. i remember someone having a similar problem a while ago, no idea if they fixed it

read my reply in the following post and see if it matches your problem

The ones on my red one in the sig are 8000k, just to give you an idea of the blueness.

Well if you pull the cable off the square headlight on the driver side(one with the problem) both go out, yet if you repeat this on the passenger side, only the square one stays on.

Again just like that post you linked too, they were working, but are not, i cant say when they went like this due to them being like it when i purchased the car.

Will have to trouble shoot more once I've finished this engine swap, and the wiring is all back in.

what i think is happening is that

the working one is working fine

the other ones relay is not providing power

therefore due to the way they work the electricity flows through all 3 of the dim ones in series

therefore unplugging the plug from any of the 3 dim ones will make all 3 go out

Lots of folk go for the 6000k HIDs - they're slightly blue but any more than that and they will be too blue/purple and you'd lose night illumination.

Most modern cars with HIDs fitted as standard are around 4300-5000k; more white than blue.

I went for a 4300k conversion myself; but that was my preference!

Richard:)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Ive got HID`s and what a difference it makes i can see at night. I managed to find a set on ebay that went for 30 quid i was well chuffed just gotta connect my earth wire back up as main beam uses the same one.

Marty

I bought a set of HIDs for my main beam from the States, they are 4000k and they are absolutely rubbish. when I switch to main beam you do not see any difference. The main beam are H1's and you have to massacre the bulb holders to do it, so there is no going back as opposed to the dipped beam which are H3's. Buy from Danny and I would advise the 4000k as they are nice and white.

Possibly that's because the dipped beam is a projector-type light which will work well with an HID bulb (Stadard fit HIDs on new cars are similar in appearance to projector beams). The main beam is a conventional reflector style lamp designed for a halogen bulb; so an HID conversion may well not ve worth it!
