I'm starting to think of the benefits of registering the V8 as a kit car. You need 8 points to retain your age related plate but i can sort of say that i don't quite meet that:

  • chassis or body shell (body and chassis as one unit - monocoque ie direct replacement from the manufacturer) (original or new) = 5 points
  • suspension = 2 points
  • axles = 2 points
  • transmission = 2 points
  • steering assembly = 2 points
  • engine = 1 point

Chassis i can't say has changed tbh, it's the same although the front subframe is a one off.

Suspension is aftermarket (springs and shocks) but ultimately it's a standard setup.

Axles are the same BUT the hicas has been removed so it has been altered

Transmission is a one off along with the engine and the steering rack assembly, arms and mounting are all unique.

What are the benefits of running it on a q plate? Can i still use my custom plate? Insurance should be cheaper too if it's a kit car

So what if you grind all the ID etc. off, get some small metal id plates made up or label makers and stick them on, claim the quality engineering work is a personall tallent....I mean who would notice ...:D

There are no benefits of running a 'Q' plate. It makes the car look like it's been stolen/recovered or home made.

And you can't use a private plate on it after registering as a kit car?

a q plate is issued if you don't qualify to retain a donor vehicle's registration or if the build date of a car is unknown/ undeterminable - not just for kit cars. If a kit car's issued with an age related plate, a private plate can be used - as long as it doesn't appear newer etc etc.

I'm just weighing up the benefits of registering as a kit car over getting the motorsport companies i've been doing some work for to put their name to the build to get it legitimately on the road as the current car.

It's no problem really doing that and it's the easiest way to get it on the road (just send off the letters to the DVLA then MOT)

Kit car insurance doesn't use no claims as far as i remember so i might get a better deal than the quoted £900 fully comp with 9 years no claims through adrian flux but i'm assuming it has to be sva registered as a kit car

All I ever do is send it back for a re-issue with a different engine size and engine number. Don't change anything else at the same time tho.

If it comes back ok then that's it, just carry on like it was a normal car.

Seriously, do your self a favor and shop around for car insurance first, try people like quote line direct (google it get a quote). my first car was a 1.9TD Xantia, everyone else was quoting well over £1500 for the year, quote line direct did it for me for £900, had my licence for 2 weeks by this point, 6 months driving ban from 2003, 28 years old and obviously no no claims bonus. my second car was also insured with them, a year after getting the Xantia, i got a 2lt turbo pug 406 exec. £630 for the year fully comp, £250 excess

OK not high performance cars i have to admit, but still large engine capacity for a new driver. beat everyone on the market.

Also have a look at classic car insurance, Ive just got mine with lynbrook, but if you cant get a quote with them, try other classic car insurance companies. they don't have a no claims bonus discount thing, but they are really cheap.
