Engine or Gearbox oil ?

This might sound like a silly question, but if you found drops of oil in the catch pan you put under the car, is there anyway of telling / testing whether it´s engine oil or gearbox oil before getting under the car and investigating the source ?

    Gearbox oil is thicker, and stinks worse, get a bit inbetween your finger and thumb and rub it, then do again with a bit of the end of dipstick and compare.
