Air leaks are part and parcel of 300zx ownership and ensuring all is ok is can be tricky, even with the right equipment.

 

The zed in the photo had several issues leading to real bad running both at tickover and on the road, the owner lives in Norway and had little choice but to pack it into a container and send it to us.

 

After all the other issues where dealt with, the final air leak that is shown in the following photo`s was loosing a surprising amount of boost given the pipe size.

The small pipe which is part of the boost solenoid assembly is not an uncommon one to come adrift but what a difference it made, boost leak checks in my opinion should be part of your normal servicing routine, beg, make or buy a boost tester flange and get a small compressor you will be surprised on even zeds which appear to be running ok can have leaks.

I see from your first picture that your using a tyre inflator to supply the compressed air through the intake system im assuming you regulate the pressure and its not the full line pressure from your compressor.

i think all you need is about 5-7 psi bud....thought ide hijack your question aimed at jeff incase you put 100psi in it and blow the pipes off;)

You dont need a huge amount of pressure to find the leaks, strangest ones I found were from the nuts holding down the balance bar, the studs go into the plenum and if like me you lost the posh domed nuts they leak round the threads.

 

Oh yea if any one has a few spare I still need to replace them

In your case Joel id imagine the wastegates would open and youd have a huge leak into the exhaust.Your only running stock boost on those tubbies ya tight wad.get some 555s and let them spool more :D

got a koyo and some greddy smic now too so she would be lapping up a bit of 555 @ 14psi action!

 

bugger... just realised the severity of this thread hijack! feel free to delete as necessary bri :wack:

We always test mine with 9psi max (0,6 bar in AUT),

Found many leaks first time, now that we changed tubs we

got anything tight.

 

By the way,- i test mine every 2-3months, takes only 5 minutes...

 

Also asked myself what happens if you push 15psi in?

Will it only blow off the small hoses or is there serious damage possible...?

As a newcomer to the Turbo world, where would you put the compressed air in?, Jeff was talking about a boost tester flange, is this a home made item?
