It's now looking very likely the turbo seals have gone on the passenger side turbo, and as it's an engine out jobby, which I don't wanna do too often, I might as well upgrade the turbos, while I'm there.

Which turbos are the best to fit, (considering power gains/cost)?

Would I need to upgrade the standard intercooler, or fuel pump?

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated...

Cheers

are you going to do it yourself?

not all of the work, I'll get engine lifted out and put back by a trusted mechanic I've used for years, and do the turbo swap myself. I've heavilly modified the T5 I've got, and I did all that work myself, (new turbo, downpipe, exhaust manifold, throttle housing, modified the inlet manifold, and revered the flow through the intercoler) so I'm sure I'll have no problems doing the swap.

As long as there's no hidden problems, niggles, or cock-ups, obviously.... :wack:

if your going to up grade on standard engine make sure you have a boost controller for those turbos, or engine melt next.

I've got an apexi avc-r controller. A few years old, but working, so it's all good... :hyper:

the t28's would be a good tub if your keeping the engine standard and yes you would need bigger intercoolers really.

would it be right that a T28 off a Pulsar would fit straight on?

Never knew that one, but if buying new does it matter. Or can you get two pulsar one cheap.

i think it would but tbh its better off buying new. not worth the risk of a second hand turbo.

I would'nt fit 2nd hand turbos without getting them refurbed and balanced 1st. Would that work out a bit cheaper, or a lot cheaper? If it's only a bit cheaper, then it's new ones, but I've got 5 kids, so if it can be done cheaper, but be of the same overall qualty, then I go the cheaper way.

I'd like to get a pair of new gt2530's, but that'd mean a divorce, and I've kinda got used to her cooking now....

Bore the turbos out and put large Wheel inside (maybe T3 size and its an easy upgrade) Plus having the Refurbed like this may cost you max 800quid for the pair

T28s are a bit serious for a stock motor. They are a big tub and can make 300+hp each.Youd never explore their potential on a stock motor and would not be able to run them past around 10psi without fear of running your injectors lean.A nice upgrade would be jwt sport 500s or z1s gt500s.Great spooling tub capable of good power if needed.

so if I upped the injectors and got a remap, then I'd be able to go over 10 psi?

No bother, I'll do that then... I'm only after 450 - 500 bhp, and from what I can gather, the internals will take up to 600 bhp, (unless I read that, and am about to be corrected lol), and so at even 500 bhp the turbos will be just joggin along under not much stress, which has got help longevity eh?

I'm new to these motors, but quite well versed on volvo turbos, so at least I'm educateable, if my presumtions are off the mark.... :)

LOL it's nice to find someone in the same boat as me :D

I'm gonna have to bend your ear on T5 tuning one day ;) I just got a 2001 X reg V70 T5 with less than 3,000 GENUINE miles on the clock. The MPG is already shocking :smash: but I'm interested in upping the power one day so looking for a bit of advice if you don't mind :D

yeh anytime pal... I'm off to get the T5 dyno'd today, and I should be joining the 300bhp club.

All the engine mods cost me about a grand, and I still havn't had her remapped yet...

How does fuel economy differ from manual to auto versions? This is an auto and does about 18.5mpg average!!!

Before I upgraded everything, driving miss daisy, I'd be lucky to see 21.5mpg, since the work, I've seen 25mpg just driving normally, not careful, and not fast.

The extra efficiency has worked in my favour that way.

Of course, floor it, and you can get averages well into single figures, but at that point the speedo gets to triple figures pretty quickly, so it's a nice balance really...

bad news from the dyno run. couldn't get her boosting right, gonna go back thursday, with the standard fuel regulator back in place, and the recirc valve back on, see if we can get her back to how she was a few weeks back. On the good side, the new clutch I had a month ago has recovered the torque I'd lost. The best run today was 289bhp with 300lbft of torque, but that was way off what it should have done, just a quick glance at the graphs we were getting told us that.

A smoke test on thursday, and another fiddle with a couple of the standard bits back on, and hopefully, normal service can be resumed, if not, then it could be the turbo leaking air past the compressor blades, which is obviously very bad news.

But fixable... they're always fixable....

^^^^^Listen to this man, he is a very knowledgable 300 man!!!^^^^^

He advised and rebuilt my 300, and my baby is good!!

Al.

i`ve read that the stock internals are good for 600bhp too.T28`s allround ye ha

600hp on a freshly rebuilt stock motor, in optimum condition with perfect mapping, yeh you should be able to get a dyno run out of it and who knows how many trouble-free miles before problems are encountered...a few have done it in the states.

....but if your using a 15yr+ old motor or if you get a hint of detonation then its Bye Bye engine.
