    you'll find bored/lazy news editors always use the motto.....if it bleeds it leads...easy peasy news!

    hence you get to think its worse than it really is....there are enough murders to have over one a day in the news...in a country of 65 million its sod all really so sleep easy

    i remember reading a report that those who fear crime the most and change their lifestyles because of that fear are the least likely to be a victim of it...the single mums and elderly...basically the biggest victims of crime IIRC are single men between the ages of 18-26...one last thought something like 60% of murder victims were drunk when killed...i guess your defenses are lower so more of an easy target etc
