The box started going the usual way, losing third then not changing at all. I done some fault code checks and then when i checked the oil it was a nice brown burnt colour so defo dead box.

This box had complete set of friction plates and springs, re-bushed, new brake band, new filters, seals and gaskets and a shift kit fitted.

Thank you for posting this really helpfull !!, i think mine is showing early sign's again despite a recon, so it's either a complete rebuild by somone i know i can trust with it or a new box

touch wood though not a decision i have to make just yet :)

Chris

you did a great job there the big question is how much would it cost to get this done?

Sure did!

I had mine fully rebuild last year and with the addition of a re-con torque converter as well, the whole lot came to about £1400 inc VAT....

Richard:cool:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I did this for £1500.00, which included:

Fully rebuild

Shift kit (rises line pressure minimizing clutch slip) £160

Prep and paint case

Re-con torque converter

Fouth one i've done now but only the second one i've fitted the shift kit too which is well worth the money.

Wow didnt realise there was so much stuff, amazing the detail of machined parts, something well out of my league. good on you mate....

Are you a Zedgarage if so didnt realize there was 1 so close to me

Not a Z garage although there are 3 Z's in there atm just a small workshop out in the sticks.

I got made redundant about 8 weeks ago so i was thinking about doing a few bits and bobs at my workshop maybe start working for myself.

Not a lot of jobs about for a 40 year old engineer atm.

Worth becoming a trader on here specializing in autobox builds???

Might be worth a try.

I've got a few jobs to finish first then ill have a word with znut.

Wow that is a great job you have done there!!

I may be looking at a rebuild myself soon!!

What difference does the shift kit make?

Does this box come anywere near the one on the 10 second car in Australia? (green one I think).

I want to build a really strong auto box.

I can think of a few needing doing to my Zed lol

good on you mate, very impressive. im sure there would be lots and lots of people who would appreciate a local place, especially making a name for your self in rebuilt autoboxes as so many go pop!

I had a rebuilt one in mine before i converted it to a manual and it was pretty good, but i doubt it had anything like the attention to detail that youve done there.

The shift kit comes from the states and is designed to raise the line pressure in the gearbox.

Basically an auto transmission relies on hydraulic pressure to operate clutch plates, which in turn select the gear via the control valve block and solenoids etc.

The clutch plates are like a multi plate clutch on a motorbike alternate steel and fibre plates, which transfer the power of the engine to different clutch assy to give different gear ratios.

Now, when these clutch plates start to slip due to either higher engine output or natural wear and tear over time they generate heat and start losing the fibre material from the fibre plates and the AFT oil starts to deteriorate and becomes contaminated blocking the fine mesh filters in the control valve block. No more gears!

So to cut a long story short the shift kit raises the hydraulic pressure in the gearbox by means of stronger control valve springs and a few mods making the clutch plate’s grip harder preventing clutch slippage.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Maybe I should do this for a living lol.

looks brilliant if i were you i would look into what the fast road auto was/had done to it, cause i reccon alot of guys would want that one. i know i did :(

you should :)

cheers
