Hi all.

 

I currently drive a Celica ST202 (Gen 6) and before that had a ST185 (Gen 5 GT4) and am after something different and have fell in love with 300zxs.

 

Been looking around pistonheads etc and seem to find myself drawn to fairladys. What is the difference with these and non fairladys? Also what is SWB? Basically im just after a guide to the different models and special editions etc.

 

All advice gratefully received. If I had to say what I was after then id have to say a manual, UK preferable and non turbo. But could be persuaded :)

all non turbo's are import only, swb is short wheel base (only a two seater), fairlady is the term used for a japanese import 300zx (thats what the japs call them), there is buying guide, will have a look for ya

Thanks guys. Am in Hartlepool. Was looking at your car on Pistonheads I think Stella. Very nice but probabaly out of my price range. Hav eyou removed spoiler or did it come without?

ive heard of some leaking, had mine 4 years now and the only time it has some water come in is when i use a pressure washer to clean the car.

SWB = 2+0 available as a slicktop, targa top and convertible. Convertible models are NA only from the factory. These are JDM cars only

 

LWB = 2+2 available as NA and TT. TT 2+2s were the only model offered on the European market.

 

JDM cars were badged 'fairladyZ' but the name was not used through out sales to the rest of the world....which is a good job. I removed mine. Gay name.

 

Only colours and trim varied (like for like, 2+2TT). Engines were the same relative to the ages of the cars. UK cars were only available until 94 whereas JDM cars available until 2000.

 

There are still some decent UK cars about, but many suffer from extensive corrosion. It's one reason I sourced the best JDM car I could find at the time and kept it garaged. Even thought I've pretty much taken the car apart, given it new paint, interior, suspension, wheels and lots of other mods, I wanted a zero-rust shell as for me, that's more important. Engines can be rebuilt, I don't want filler, patches of weld and a scabby underside.

 

UK cars are 'apparently' cheaper and easier to insure. I have a JDM and have never had issues getting it insured and it's inexpensive to insure.

My old GT4 was a 2litre turbo and was JDM and never had problems with insurance despite people telling me I would. Will do some quotes when I can be arsed.

 

Seen a few with horrid caravan style rear fogs lights hanging down. Is it easy to incorporate into rear clusters?

I cant find it anywhere??

N/A's were available from day one right up to the end of production in 2000, but all being JDM.

Advantages.... Cheaper to insure, no bloody turbos to go wrong ;)..... ermmm... nope that's about it ;)

 

Disadvantages ... Less power, uglier standard front bumper ;) no hunking great power boost :D sloooooowwwwwwwww :rofl:

Were the targe tops in production uptill 2000? And when people say TT do they mean Targa Top or twin turbo?

the reason i went for mine was: it was a uk car, for me being 20 when i brought her uk car was cheaper by £1200 on insurance than a jap car. Non turbos are more reilable ive been told and cheaper to buy and run.

Yeah, it's not too bad. I've got a custom peice of loom I swap out at MOT time. One of my reversing lights can be used as a fog light. But since my Z never gets driven in bad weather or winter, I never use it. So take the bit of loom out so that I have 2 reversing lights again. Looks much better. :)
