So i can go to Z2009

Went for a run to warm up oil for oil & filter change. All of a sudden engine light came on,revs increased slighty to 1200rpm and electric fan came on.

Changed oil & filter,so i know there is enough oil, checked water ok.

Now on starting all is fine for between 10-40 seconds then same thing happens, engine light comes on,revs increase and electric fan on.

Please help, want ot go to Z2009 this weekend.

try cleaning the temp sensor, its the yellow connector on the hardpips that go in the front of the engine, just take the conn off and clean with a small driver

cheers StellaZ,ill try that,i thought it might be someting like that, diid pull it off but didnt clean it !

If not the sensor, could be air in the rad system, trying bleeding it, park slightly uphill, undo rad cap, and bleed screw on left of rad, start engine and watch the level, turn heater to hot and full fan, keep topping up, bit at a time.

Check all hoses are getting hot, if so, turn off and leave to cool down, tighten screw, coolant may pressure up and out of cap so keep cap on, after its cooled. re check level.

well.cleaned temp sensor plug check wires, have 1000ohms across sensor and still doing it as soon as you start or after about 10 secs.

I havent touched cooling system since doing timing belt and at the time got rid of air in system so cant see that it would be that.

would it do any harm to drive like this,i could unplug fan so that wasnt running,I know i have enough oil and water.

Air flow meter fault leading to "get you home mode" maybe? Does it fail to rev past 2500rpm or so once it happens?

  • Author

Just been for a run and it will rev above 2500 sometimes, sometimes hesitant, jerky but if put foot down smooth acceleration. Its as if have a missfire, did put new iridium spark plugs in 8 weeks ago but been ok till now, although that wouldnt bring on engine light.

Any more suggestions please.

ok,but would that bring on engine light on dash, raise tickover and bring on electric fan ?

Yes Smithy,i agree,i still think its temp sensor related, either faulty sensor or wiring. Who can check for error codes,i live in Chelmsford,Essex.

Dosent look as if ill be at Z2009 !

Do it yourself mate, only takes 10mins or so. That link i posted shows you how ;)

Cheers Smithy, off tommorrow, maybe ill get it sorted so i can go to Z2009.

If the engine light is indicating a hot cat then that is unburnt fuel and that means failure to ignite / missfire in one or more cylinders.

Doesnt really explain fan running though.

Bad news matey, as your zed is OBD1 ( ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC 1 ) it has NO feature that brings the engine management light on.

This means either a corrupted eprom ( chip ) or more likely the eprom socket has an issue, check for a a loose soldered joint, you will need to remove the ecu located under the passenger footwell and remove the lids carefully remove the sister board so access can be made to the eprom / carrier from both sides, check with a magnifying glass, any broken or loose joint need resoldering ( remove the eprom if socketed if not be real quick when doing soldering work as heat kills components, use a screwdriver as a heat sink.

Hope that helps

Jeff

Just checked your rides out, you still got a super chips chip in there ?
