never did it before, only started about a week ago, doesnt do it when cold, i have an unknown chip in my car which im taking out and putting my standard ecu back in, what else could cause this, i am running standard boost (that i know of)

It won't be the chip if it's only just started doing it.

It's unlikely you'd be running standard boost though if it's been chipped? Unless you removed boost jets or a boost controller?

Could be some bad fuel, ignition problems - PTU is a common failure when the weather starts to warm up.

Fuel pressure regulator or damper?

ive just changed the fpr and dampner, ive not changed the boost at all, also the chipped ecu was borrowed for a rolling road day lol

Well there you go then LOL

The chip could be designed for anything if you don't know the spec of it and why bother if you're not running more boost? LOL

Are the FPR and damper definately good/new?

will start with the ecu, then check the damper and fpr again

come to think of it, it only started after i cleaned my engine bay up????

cheers people

check the dett sensor plug..could have been disturbed, mines got a resister in so thats what the yellow conectors are mate

Did you post alan that youve changed your pcvs?If the old ones were faulty you may have oil in the pipes and plenum which is drawn in under boost.this will cause detonation for sure.

Metallic tinny sort of rattle. Never experienced it in any of my cars, but have in others.

Stella it happened to my z years ago before I went for the big build and it was simply bad fuel that I picked up from BP,I ran the tank almost dry before I filled up again and I have never had it happen again.

I see, i thought thats what it was, is this a result of underfueling or running lean under boost?

Pretty much. It's when you get peak combustion at an incorrect moment, ie not at its peak of the duty cycle.

Ignition timing/injection timing? Sorry for thread highjacking. How is this problem usually solved. All i know is 99 ron is supposed to help prevent pre dettonation

Problem is solved by finding the route cause. Can be a number of things from an incorrect fuel map/boost set too high, knackered plugs, bad fuel.

Understood :)

Good luck with solving the problem anyway StellaZ

Knock sensor should however pick this up and put the fuel map into safety mode I believe or advance/retard the timing. Knock sensor is basically a small microphone that picks up any localised shock. Some people bypass this with a resistor when the wiring goes faulty. You remove some of the failsafes in the engine by doing that though.

have recently filled up from bp

i have changed the pcv valves, they were completely blocked, will it clear itself

If it is bad fuel that has caused it then you need to fill up when the fuel light comes on and it should be fine but while you are having problems with det DO NOT drive it hard as you will destroy the engine.
