Crusie Control not working ?!! Any ideas ?

Hi all,

My Cruise Control has suddenly ceased working and will not activate when I press the 'SET' button on the steering wheel.

I thought it could be a fuse, but there are NO fuses for the cruise control.

Has anyone had a similair problem or can suggest where I should look ?

Help very much appreciated.......Thanks.

Check the ASCD, it is the strange roundish type thing on the upper Drivers side of the engine, You can find it by following the control cable back from the throttle bodies (the one that isn't the throttle cable)

Hi Nico,

What should I check for in the ASCD ?

Thanks.

Hey Alesi,

Sorry i was pushed for time earlier.

Check the hose coming out of the ASCD device that i described above. it is operated off pressure, hence if there is no pressure from that hose, if it is damaged say, then that is your problem.

The other things to check (probably before the above) is the fuses, Cant remmeber which ones myself, but i know some who is seldom wrong that does :)

Battery -> Horn Relay (Location : Engine Bay, 10A). If this one is blown, the MAIN cruise control (i.e. on the left pod) will work, but it will NOT be able to set the speed. Seems it cuts continuty from the Set/Reset/accel THROUGH the Horn relay.

Ingition Switch -> ASCD (a.k.a. Cruise Control) Hold Relay This one makes sense.

Battery -> Stop Lamp Switch. Depressing the brake kills the ASCD, makes sense.

Ingition Switch -> Electronic Speedometer

Big up to Henri for the above.

Hope that helps

Also check the electrical connectors near that vacuum-thingie.

One of those connector might have come loose or decided to grow some oxidation :)

This one baffled me on mine - quite simple in the end. When you're driving along, simply put your foot UNDER the clutch and pull it upwards - try engaging it then. You could also try pulling the brake pedal up as well. The reason for this is that the clutch and brake pedals have switches on them that cancel the cruise control when they are pressed. As time goes by, the switches wear out. The cure for this problem is difficult - the dashboard has to come out to adjust the switches!!! This was the problem on mine and also on Harve's car. Let me know how you get on,

Ahummm....there is not a single fuse for the cruise control, but a total of FOUR of them.

Go and check them all (it's in the TT.Net faq)

Is your horn working ? if not, replace the fuse.

Otherwise...you may have a problem with the two CC killers.....the one on the clutch (if yau have a manual) and the one on the brake pedal, have a look there..

Zee you

Henri

Andy maybe right, I had this same problem on a Supra Turbo, cruise just stopped working and I had no signs of why. My car was Auto. but I needed to get the pads changed...after it came back from Toyota hey presto...cruise was working again. So that would make sense about the switches on the pedals.

After my last post on this topic I thought I would try adjusting the switches. Prepare to have your hands shredded if you take this on!!!!! First of all you need to remove the instrument panel - this is a fairly big job. Remove the cover over the instruments (2 screws), remove the two pods that stick out (air-con on left 2 screws and switches on right 2 screws), remove the instrument panel surround (6 screws), remove the instrument panel (4 screws), then remove the steering wheel (one bolt - be carefull you know its position so it can go back correctly!). From now you can see the brake cancel switches quite easily. Unfortunately its the clutch switches you need!!! They are to the left of the brake switches (obvious really!) but are quite awkward to get to. Undo the lock nuts (14 mm) and simply (yeah right!!!) screw the switches in a turn. Put everything back together and go for a test drive - hey presto, no more having to pull the clutch up with my feet!!!

This is not a particularly difficult job - it just needs some patience. The only tools you need are a phillips head screwdriver and a couple of spanners.

Good luck if you take this on - be sure that it is the switches causing the problem as well!!!

Andy
