Just caught the tail end of this thread and want to share a topic discussed today on Radio 2 (yes i`m sad)

Talking about discrimination where an English girl went for an interview to work in an Italian restraunt but didn`t get the job because she was English and didn`t look Italian.

This was not considered discrimination because the owner only wanted Italians working in his restaraunt. Does that mean then that as Fish and Chips is an English dish it is OK to refuse Ethnics a job in a Chippy.

I live in the middle of Slough, a pretty multicultural place like most of the UK these days. In fact I live down a street with a great many different ethnicities represented - including white.

 

You know what I like to see? That everyone down here is friendly, and gets on. Even the kids all play together (usually attempting to jump out in front of my car, which bugs me, because parents really should keep an eye on their kids, one day they'll do that and the person will be going faster than me and hit them).

 

Conversely I used to live all of half a mile away, in another ethnically diverse street. Everyone in the street talked to everyone else, BUT, if you walked down to the shopping centre.. well..

 

I walked past a pool hall there one day, and a bunch of lads looked out at me like they wanted me to drop dead there and then for being in 'their' patch.. That scared me.. And disappointed me.. So I'm white, so what? I was about their age, I wasn't wandering about with a group of BNP supporters, and I lived 20 yards away..

 

As for the 'speak English in England' bit..

 

Don't you think we should practice what we preach first? What about all the retirement age English people who retire in the Costa Del England. How many of them speak Spanish? Very few.. They seem to hang around in their own English-speaking apartment blocks, and go to the English run bars, and eat English food..

 

That /really/ winds me up, having lived on the Continent for several years and been a regular visitor to Holland - sure most people under 40 speak English, but they appreciate it if you at least /try/ to speak their language..

Not going to get stuck into a debate but I have to say I agree wholeheartedly with Glen's view. Could add SO much more but I don't think this place is here for that purpose.

I'm also not wanting to get into this debate much further, but I do agree re the MOBO's and Brits for the following reason -

 

the Brit awards do not only recognise music of white origin, as proved by past nominees/winners such as Craig David, So Solid Crew etc, so why should there be the MOBO's? If there was a MOWO ceremony, it would be labelled recist and politically incorrect.

When we drive if someone cuts you up or does something stupid or dangerous do you not curse and call them names that are offensive?.

 

When men drive if they see a woman driving who is not getting out of their way quick enough, what is she called.

 

An asian or black man driving, if they are in your way or in a faster car and over take you or get in your way, what are they referred to?.

 

I drive every day, and yes I have had this happen to me, abuse from men who always need to get there quicker.

 

I have called people who drive names, but I never ever mean it in a nasty way.

 

And as for those who call me names, well all I can say is please beaware that I will if possible ALWAYS get my own back.

my girlfriend works as a teacher in a secondary school in Blackburn which has a large asian population, and there are pupils who are born in the UK who are having to have English speaking lessons becuase they cant speak it well enough. And its all becuase they dont speak English at home.

I have a friend who came over from Thailand in about 87. He and is sister didnt speak any English when they came over and his mum spoke very little. However she insisted on speaking English all the time unless they didnt know the English, and listening to him you cant tell he was from abroad. His sister has a thicker accient than me.

I am not raciest well I dont think myslef as one. People are free to choose thier religion, but for me people left the country becuase of laws, torrorism, appression so why when they leave their country which they think is so terrible, so they still class themselves as another nationality and still keep thier values.

 

People in the UK have been told that we should accomodate other peoples way of life becuase that is thier contries traditional and cultural way. This then means that they dont try to accomodate the UK way of life.

 

Again, my mum is a teacher which is getting a lot of asilum seekers and the boys think nothing of hitting a girl, which has happened a few times, and they think nothing off pushing infront of girls in a queue because in thier culture they are alowed to do that.

 

If you see aslyum seeksers walking down the street if there is a woman with them you will always see the woman walking behind the man. Not always. But if there are 3 of them 2 men and a woman, the woman is 90% of the time walking behind them.

This is not the way of life that I want to accomodate in MY/OUR country. How would you feel if some boy hit your daughter you complained to the school and if the boy was British he would be punished and if he as an aslyum seeker being told,

There is nothing we can do because its allowed in his culture.

They only way they then will learn is some one lamps them, and they they pull the racest attack card.

Considering the UK hasnt been invaded since 1066 I think getting close to 1000 years unforced influenced language I think we can say its a real language.

 

Again Im not racest or dont consider myself to be. People need help getting away from thier country and they want to come here an live like we do in the UK but keep some aspects of thier life. Fine, good. But if they come here because they cant get a job (They are called Ecomonical Refugees) at home and just want to move here for a house, money and not live like the rest of us. Again the statement about the men treating the women differently, this is not all of the cultrures that do that. There are people who are British who so that. But you tend to find the middle east people, Afgans, Iraqies where most of the people come from tend to be like that.

Stuart you are right, the majority of children born to non english parents do not speak english as their first language. And when they go to school for the first time they are at a disadvantage.

 

I worked in an infant school in Birmingham as a teaching assistant, and my job was to learn them to speak and read in english. The vast majority learned really quickly, but occasionally we had real problems as they were not allowed to speak or read english at home.

 

This is England, I think that if people wish to live here then yes they should learn to speak english, but would it not also be polite to learn our children a variety of languages? Not just french or german.

 

My neighbours are Yemenies and they are the best neighbours we have ever had. I have never heard any arguments or seen the women walking behind the men, although I know this does happen. I think they have tried very hard to fit in, as it were. I can speak a few words to my neighbours in their language and it is always greatly appreciated.

 

There has to be give and take for the world to go round.
