I think Apache has done this mod to his Z. It's been a good many years since I had a car that had interior lights that went off as soon as the door was closed.

How hard is it to retro fit a time delay relay or whatever they are to a Z? Easy job or a PITA?

I'd like it linked to the ignition barrel as I'd like to have that illuminated too.

thats odd, my interior light stays on till the ignition is switched on, and my barrel lights up with the side lights...

I have indeed done this................and linked it to the ignition barrel light as well:D - I did it whilst the interior was out so it was an easy job to do.

They are normally in the footwell fuse box area, fag packet size iirc.

If Phil has done the mod, it would be good to get him to expand on his close to the chest teaser info lol.

I did this, bought one off eBay for a few £ and fitted it into the interior light.

Mine fades automatically ...... was it a specific year mod ? Mines a 19915 series 2 Jap Spec

I'm sorry to rave an old thread up here, but I'm trying to install one of these!

Could anyone that as fitted one please explain how you fitted this for me? I want to fit it to the interior light as apposed to the door switch.

There are 3 wires to the light.

12v permanent (for the on constant position) Black

12v switched (for the door operated on/off) Green

Earth - Dark Brown.

I am confused because the door switch operates a relay some where, I can hear it clicking when I press the door switch. Why would a simple interior light need to be relay driven??

I'm normally very good with things like this, but I can't get my head round it.

The unit in the link has 2 wires, 1 is supposed to fit to the switched earthed of a light and the other directly to earth?

The relay is fitted in the side panel behind the passenger seat, a relay is used as the rear hatch is connected via a diode this way although they operate the same light they are electrically isolated from each other.

To fit the unit that fades the light off you need to fit it across the relay contacts and not at the door switch, if its just the on off delay then it can be done at the switch.

Right, just an update on this.

I bought the delay device from ebay.....

Dead easy to fit after I looked at the wiring diagram!

Removed the interior light unit & unplugged it.

I connected the red wire from the device to the green wire of the light and the black from the device to the black wire of the light. I used scotch tap connectors to join the wires, then plugged the light back into the car harness and hey presto....the light stays on when the door is closed for about 12 seconds then quickly fades to off!

Wiring at the light :-

Brown - 12v to bulb

Green - switched earthed via a relay operated by door switch

Black - permanent earth for when light is switched to ON

All the box does is keep the light earthed for 12 seconds after door is closed.

A nice simple mod that just updates the car a bit and I find really useful. Cheap as well!:)
