Just before christmas my beloved Zed decided to give me a lovely present of needing a new gear box.

Its a 1994 uk Auto tt; have been quoted £2000 to rebuild the Auto box complete with oil cooler and hoses etc

But as I am not planning on getting rid of her any time soon, am thinking manual conversion is the safest and best option.

What are the pros and cons of coverting her?

I had mine converted by a mate, just cuz i wanted manual, turns out the autobox was duff anyway. Conversion including box cost me £1300.

You get solid reliable gears, you get to DECIDE when it changes gear, nothing worse than accelerating round a corner then the auto box drops a gear... scary.

Pros

- A lot cheaper than £2000 to convert (typically £1200-£1500).

- You will be getting rid of the Z's main reliablity weakness

- Car will be worth £500-£1000 more with Manual gearbox

- You wont have to put up with people saying "Nice car...oh, its an Auto"

- The Car will be noticeably quicker and more responsive

Cons...ermm.......

john300zxblack- does your mate do this professionally? am considering changing my auto to manual.

£2k sounds very expensive, mate.

I had mine rebuilt by a highly skilled and reputable company that has been in the auto 'box business for many years. The whole lot, including a recon torque convertor, came to little over £1200.
