I always thought it was the effect it had on babes. I knew it was caused by a prescribed drug given to women in like the 50s or 60s or something.

It was an anti-emetic (eg prevents sickness) and was frequently prescribed to pregnant women, unfortunately it caused terrible birth defects. I think it has some other uses now, can't remember what though.
