Problem with jet washing is it can take time for the connections to corrode so it might work for a week or a month or 3 months but you never know what will happen, its just like getting your phone wet, might work fine for a while craig

With so many electrical componants to these engines i wouldnt suggest a jet wash if you ever want it to run again, youve already got the best idea just start taking bits of here and there and carry on with the elbo grease. just my 2p

what colour was the smoke, also a tip i was told and ive used it ever since, get yourself a pot of forte cooling conditioner, 1st its great at heeping your cooling system clean but 2nd it turns your coolant neon green so its much easier to find leaks. its done wonders for my cars in the past.

check your track rod ends mate, if the wheel wobbles slightly when off the ground that will cause the prob your describing, I had it on mine between 60/70mph turns out my pass track rod end was on its way out.
