Great place for a holiday, went a couple of years ago to the tourist area Varadero. Somewhat isolated from the Cuban peeps, but if you take a tour into Havana you will see what it must have looked like in the early 50's before the troubles. Hopefully , the Cubans will root some of the tourist $ back into tidying up a lovely city.
Don't be too narrow minded there, anything and I mean anything can be acquired for the exchange of $$$, all the waiters at the hotels are related to taxi drivers, cigar makers or brothers of very pretty sisters ???
Totally enjoyed it and would go back again, no problem ( more than Gary Glitter can), the Hotels on the "strip" are excellent, no problems with food shortages there, most are Spanish owned so the usual type of menue, but take an Island tour ,see the interior, tobbacco plantations, sugar plantations etc.
The people don't have a lot but they seem happy enough, and will make do with just about anything, look-out for Aerotaxi, scary. ENJOY.
