  1. Just fitted the engine back in the car and the passenger side is smoking badly out the exhaust. The thing is, not all the time. It is an 89 J.I. TT auto. It does it on start up from cold then, when the engine reaches temp and you start it back up, its ok !! Turn it off, start it up and sometimes it smokes and sometimes it doesnt, Car is still up on axle stands by the way and has not been road tested yet. Also, and heres the best bit Spotted a petrol leak dripping from the passenger side turbo !! Checked all around the fuel lines, IAC valve, injectors and injector rails and nowt  Last but not least, sometimes she drops a cylinder or 2 and when you switch her off and re-start it, she is ok, sometimes !! Cleaned every coil pack, injector, and every other plug with contact cleaner and made sure they are all tight. Is it possible for unburned fuel to find its way through the turbo ?? The valve under the passenger wing was clicking away quite loudly so i changed that already. All suggestions and help are most welcome. Cheers, Alan......
  2. I have my engine ready to fit this Sunday if you want to take a look ??? Aint as bad as it sounds, honest !! :p
  3. HEY, Nothing up with Glasgow !!!! Apart from the fact it p****s with rain most of the time !!! :nono:
  4. Plus when its out, you can do a few wee extra bits that are awkward when its in situ !! Various hoses, pipes, cam belt? etc. ;)
  5. Sorry, Yes you could, technically, but the answer is still no !!
  6. Cheers guys, Had the engine and auto box out together last time when I did the turbos. Was just wondering if it would be easier to leave the box in this time, saves a bit of time and hassle. Engine and box came out together and went back in together last time ok ! Well when I say ok, I mean a wee bit of sweat and a high lift jack, but it went with no damage !!!! Alan.....
  7. Hi, What is the easiest way to go when removing the engine from my89, auto, t/t. Engine and box out together, or leave the box in ?? Is the bolts around the bell housing even kinda accesible ? Can you unbolt the torque convertor from the flywheel, leaving it in place so the engine will come forward enough to lift out ? Cheers in anticipation, Alan.......
  8. Going to try it on Sunday !!!! What the hell, its only a car !!!

Try your local breakers yard. All foreign stuff has them on the windscreen washer hoses !! Especially the Merc Sprinter.
  10. My mate used it mainly to divert heat away from the fibreglass body on his GT/40 kit car. Seemed to make a slight difference to his bhp as well tho.
  11. You could always do what me mate done !!! Drive it around the corner, un-plug the ECM, call the AA, say it wont go, they will lift the bonnet and ask you where you want it towed to!! :D Cheating I know, but if you pay the annual premium and dont break down you are paying for nowt !! Use it !!! Alan......
  12. Already tried that. Used stp engine flush, add to a warm engine, idle for 15 mins, dont drive and then dump and re-fill with fresh oil and filter !! Thinking about road testing it, if no change then putting new flush back in, leaving it a few minutes longer and then trying it. An old timer at work said this problem was common on early Cessna Aero engines. The cure there was to drain a litre of engine oil off, put in a litre of ATF and run it for a short while. The hotter it gets, the thinner the ATF becomes and will find its way in anywhere !!! He also said that an egg in the radiator will cure a small leak :( Sounds more like a Gordon Ramsey solution, but as they say, Desperate times call for desperate measures !!!! Alan...
  13. Is there any thin oil that could be used, even short term to get the oil flowing through them ?? Or is it the case that when there shut, thats it ??
  14. nope, heads were lifted off the donor car complete with cams etc and refitted right onto my engine after the old gaskets had been scraped off.
  15. Al of them sound to be noisy, although with the old trusty stethoscope screwdriver, the right bank appears to be the worse. She idles ok but sometimes cuts out after you rev her. Dont know how long the heads were off the donor car unfortunately, but they were upsaide down to get the old head gasket cleaned off.
  16. While I am not doubting the benefits of good oil, What is puzzling me is why are the tappets not pressurising ??
  17. changed it to what ?? Bear in mind, the engine is just put back together and not been run on the road yet.
  18. yup, cam lobes are wet and pressure gauge is over halfway.
  19. brand new Castrol Magnatec just put in.
  20. 100% its the top end. Filter that was in it was a Jap filter, its an import car, and it done it. Changed the oil & filter, Fram filter and it is still the same ??
  21. Well its time to make a decision !!! Road test it or not !!!
  22. Yup, Tried that and no joy  Thought that if it was running at normal temp for 10 mins or so it would sort it out, but no, still a tappety rattle  Al
  23. Oil pressure is half way up the gauge when cold and drops slightly to 2 when at normal operating temp, all on tickover. What are the tappets meant to be when set up correctly ?? I assumed that if the heads were allright on the donor car they would be allright to go straight on to my car ??? Or am I missing summit ?? Cheers for the feedback, I will not be beat and will fix this !! :D Alan
  24. Just refitted the engine after a pair of 2nd hand heads and turbos. Been assured that the heads are from an auto, same as mine and were nice and quite before breaking. Car is all rebuilt, new platty plugs, oil flushed and replaced with Magnatec, new filter etc Car has not been driven as yet, only started and all the niggly bits sorted out, but here comes the problem !!!!! Helluva tappet rattle  Been advised to drive it and the tappets will fill with oil and pressurise, but it goes against the grain to drive something that doesnt sound right. Double checked the timing marks and it seems ok, pressure test each cylinder and thet pan out at around 150/ 160 psi each cylinder. Will i fook it by driving it for a test run ??? Any help will be gratefully appreciated. Cheers, Alan.....
