lotsa great advice on here as usual, reminds me of my first post with all my similar questions, PcBoss have a look at this link: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=26850
im 20 and have 1yr ncb, had my license for 3 yrs and live in a supposedly bad area of leicester wher i park th car in th street. i cdnt get th car insured in my name for less than 3 grand (thats third party f+t), tried absolutly evry insurance company i could find but because of my age insurance is sky high.
tried to get classic insurance because it is a 2nd car but for some daft reason u cant get classic insuranace for young drivers, WTF?? have to be 23 yrs old minimum
all those insuarnace companies in th back of maxpower are a waste of time, thy gave me worse quotes than other insurers. bottom line is: young driver + 300bhp car = ££££££
in th end as my mum dsnt have her own car at th moment i insured with mum as th policy holder and me as an additional driver, still paying £1500 tpft for an import TT, i think fully comp was bout £2000.
with regards to getting a car to suit ur experience i totally agree, i drove my zed 3 months befor having an accident in may and its been crippled since. although th accident wasnt entirly my fault i was kinda speeding to work at th time and had only travelled 40 yards from a junction befor having to slam my brakes on. cdnt avoid th guy, but then he shdnt have tried to cut accross me. oh wel thyv admitted liability, finally, so th car shud be back soon enuf.
iv had a few close shaves and lost th back end in heart stopping moments of stupidity (one of which caught me completly by surprise on a baking hot, dry day with 3 of my mates in th car). we are so lucky ther was no traffic coming in th opposite direction. i have learnt my lesson and am almost scared to even attempt to play around with th car on corners, even light turns. to me its just not worth th risk and i KNOW am not experienced enuf to drive like tht neway
going from a 1.3L pug 309 to a 3LTT RWD car is a masssssive step, th power difference, handling, eveything about th driving experience. u have to be extra aware and at full concentration all th time.
thr also not very economical to run (not surprisingly), 15mpg in n around town is appalling n i find myself constantly watching th fuel meter, n thats with careful driving.
get a runaround car for a few years, drive carefully and build up ur ncb, save up for th car itself and insuaranc. its definatly worth th wait. my cars not exactly a minter, it has its niggling things i dnt like bout it but i love it to bits and th feeling u get driving it is absolutly awesome :D
