Im a shop steward at my place, trust me, its the most thankless task ever!! On the plus side, if you have/build, a good working relationship with your boss, there can be a few good perks!! It is volentary, so you work hard without any monitary benifit, and if you dont know your companys terms and conditions, You will need to know them, inside out. You will also have to learn employment law as well!! I've been doing it for 4 years, thouroughly enjoy it, but the first few years were a huge learning curve!!
