As you've gathered the radio loom doesn't have an earth - its through the chassis/aerial! At least you didn't make the mistake I made of thinking the light circuit was actually the earth - no lights at 6pm on the country lanes back home... I simply slipped a connector behind one of the centre unit bolts to get the earth wire - but then the person who had the car before me decided to cut all the connectors anyway..... not much problem for my stereo. Still have't worked out what "tapes" are, though! StuartR
  2. Thanks Steve, Is this the guy you "disguised" in your letter to Nissan (X engineering in Darlington?)? Seems you have sh*t bad luck on that car!! Hope the BM is going well. I can't afford for any "extras" at the moment....but the car is still under "warranty" from the guy I bought it off, so should get most problems sorted (well, as far as the warranty probably goes, or doesn't). Cheers, StuartR
  3. jaylox A bit off thread, but I've noticed your in M'Bro (still?). I've just joined the 300ZX community, and I'm looking for resources, etc. in the area! I see you've used Falcon, but your last post seems to be "scathing"??! I need to find someone who can change centre bearing, etc. and who generally knows what they're on about for these cars!!! I've been told Andy at Richmond is good? And do any of the people in the area get together??? And I can't help with the LHD, unfortunately... StuartR
  4. Thanks Kevin I'll give him a call. Anyone know anybody else? Just trying to cover all the bases! StuartR
  5. Anyone know of a good garage/engineer in Teesside (or surrounding area) that has dealt with 300ZXs? I'm just looking for someone who I can trust to help as/when needed! I'm happy enough to go further afield on recommendation, say to Newcastle, but local would be best. Ta, StuartR
  6. I have similar behaviour in my TT, but not anywhere near as bad as yours sounds. It seems to like to change to Power when cold and heavyish on the right foot, but I find if you lift off the gas for a moment it goes away again (this may be normal behaviour!). Since you've got the Jap auto switch, does it behave itself in HOLD mode? I find it less hassle to drive like this for the first few miles than having to knock it in/out of POWER mode.
  7. I noticed a problem with the door open warning chime (when lights on) when I was ar*eing up fitting a stereo. I think its on the same fuse as the electric aerial/central locking (the lowest 10A fuse on the left) - I blew the fuse, and the chime stopped (although the lightws were on!). But if your locking is working, then its not going to be this.... StuartR
  8. F.T. I've been looking on the web, and there are some companies that will cover cars upto 12 years old, and less than 120k on the clock. The one that I looked at in a little more detail gave what looked like good cover for 24 months at about £460. Can't remember the name though (I have a list of the companies I looked at somewhere). Mine is also just over 10 years old, so a lot won't bother, but there are some that do (i.e. some companies offer "classic warranties"). I may give some a call soon just for sh*ts and grins! Stuart
  9. Hi all, Anyone have any experience with buying warranties for these cars? It seems to me that, should they go wrong, they could be expensive to repair. A warranty might be a wise investment, providing it gives the right level of cover. This is certainly something I'm considering - I'd rather fork our £400 now, than possibly £2000 later! So any info than anyine has would be appreciated! StuartR
  10. Thanks bagins, Tax is such a fekking rip-off - for your goods you are paying import tax on goods plus shipping, and then VAT on the lot (i.e. VAT on the import tax as well) and then excise duty on top of that (i.e. tax on vat on tax) - in all you pay tax 3 times over! However, I'm betting it still works out cheaper!!! Anyone got any ideas on the stalling problem?
  11. Thanks Guys, AndyZ - I would like to get that cover if poss (and perhaps some other little bits if you have them). I have sent a message to your e-mail address. I've only been on here a few weeks, and already feels like home (Ok so its a bit cheesey!)
  12. Thanks Jamiee, You can mail me at raynors@mdctech.com (I though I had the e-mail address shown as an option, but these bulletin boards are just too advanced for me!) At least I now know how NOT to fuse the lights! And it only took 3 fuses to find the problem! Stuart
  13. (at last, a newish subject for me). I previously posted regarding a problem with my 92 Jap import intermittently stalling. Someone suggested I test the FICV(?) valves, which I did by turning on the climate control. As expected the revs raised to 1000 from 750. So I thought, problem is not here! However, turning the CC off consistently causes the car to stall (every time!). Anyone any ideas what I should be looking at next? I intend to change plugs, filters, oil, etc. soon. Anyone had experience with getting bits from Courtesy Nissan in the US - seems getting the whole lot in dollars for less than the plugs in pounds is good sense to me! Aside from the stall the car is running like a peach, even in all the rain/snow! I just wonder why I didn't get one sooner!!! Stuart
  14. Further to my message about my stereo and failed lights..... (don't want to clog up the board with all my ramblings!) Can anyone give me (or point me in the direction of) a diagram of the internal fuse layout - my cover panel is missing? I want to know what fuse is for what circuit! The car is a 92 Jap import. Thanks, Stuart
  15. Hi All, The muppet that had my car previously decided to wire in his stereo by cutting all the wires from the plug, rather than getting an adapter (and did the same to the aerial wire as well). I tried to wire in my stereo at the weekend (boy was it cold) and unbeknown to me I managed to short the lighting circuit. Stereo fine - lights not! Of course I find out the lights are knackered when I come to go home last night, so not only snow/ice, but without vision! Incidentally handles just fine on ice!!? Anyway, can anyone point me in the right direction for what wire is what? I think the following (on a Jap import), after managing to identify the speaker wires OK. Yellow - Battery (permanent live)? Blue - ACC (live on ignition switch)? Green/Red - Earth (is this the earth, or something else?) Red/Black - feed to electric aerial. Some strange things happened yesterday when I was testing the circuits. 1. Testing amps between Green/Red and Yellow seemed to activate the lights. 2. Testing amps between Green/Red and an earth (I used the cigar lighter body) caused the light on circuit fuse to blow. This gave no resistance when I tried to find the earth using the ohms tester? Have I found the light circuit for the stereo rather than earth? Does it earth on the stereo chassis rather than through the loom? Other quick questions! Does the aerial need an amplifier or something - the signal appears very weak? Of course, the stereo could be knackered! The speakers show about 4.5 ohms each - does this mean the amplifiers, etc. have been bypassed? I haven't looked yet! Thanks for the help from all you experienced people! Stuart
  16. Thanks Guys, Looks like I'm in for a load of fun! I plan to do the diagnostic stuff over the holidays, but I don't expect I'll find too much amiss (fingers crossed) - and if I do, the warranty should sort it out. The stalling only happened twice, and Hairsy is right - I was switching between N and D. I had a right panic before realising you can't start the car in D!!!! There was me thinking it was dead - apparently I went as white as a sheet! Got much better mileage on the way down than back up again - I suppose the M25 carpark didn't help. And yes (Hairsy) - I WAS driving like a girl (so many people have warned me its a license loser!) And the car is a Jap import - its still got the flare on the passenger side! At least I think its a flare  I'll be sure to call on the years of accumulated wisdom (?!!) should I find anything unexpected! Again Happy XMas, etc. to everyone. StuartR
  17. Hi All, Just took delivery of my first 300ZX this weekend! Its a 92 TT auto. Already taken to London and back (500 mile round trip) and even the wife is well impressed. Methinks a good choice of car! I have a few questions? 1. Having enjoyed the traffic of the M25 yesterday, sat in traffic for 2 hours and moving a phenomenal 1 MPH, the car occasionally stalled going from N to D. Is this something to be overly concerned about? It restarted fine, drives fine, and idles smoothly at 750 rpm. I also get full boost (700 mmHg) so I think that the engine management, etc. is OK, and the car never even got hot (on the gauge at least) - yet to do a diagnostic though! 2. Can anyone shed any light on the Hold function of the gearbox? I almost got stuck in a compromising situation when I pulled out of a siding expecting full (aircraft) thrust, and all I got was normal acceleration. Does Hold restrict boost? 3. I managed 250(ish) miles on 2/3 tank of fuel - is this good? Judging by some stuff I've read its probably better than I expected. I'm sure I'll have lots more stuff to ask as I get used to the car, but at the moment I'm just grinning from ear to ear! Have a good Xmas and New Year, all. StuartR
