Why do diesel engines become smokey with age?
BMW do a 3.0 twin turbo diesel, uses one small turbo and one large, quite clever. (where was on their 3.0 twin turbo petrol they use two small turbos like on the ZX) IIRC 272bhp in standard trim, but being a diesel it can be made more powerful very easily, simple ECU remap and another 30-40 bhp can be obtained from it i believe

Why do diesel engines become smokey with age?
depends on the smoke, little puff of black smoke when given some greif is just removal of a bit of carbon build up. Blue smoke when started from cold is normally worn injectors providing the wrong fuel/air mixture.... When i was at school one firm that ran the school bus service used from 25 y/o + scrap heaps. Hole place would be covered in a blue haze for 5 minutes after they were started. Diesel technology has evolved amamzingly in the last few years, had a go in an 07 reg BMW 320d the other day, not far of performance wise from my 1998 323i I had. Quite amazing. Petrols are beginnging to follow suit, BMW has just started fitting Direction injection systems (and turbos) to some of its petrol line up. The difference in economy and performance is staggering. Current 530i manages an output of 272BHP a 0-60 time of 6.5 seconds whilst returning an average of 37.7 mpg. (those figures are for the automatic version!)

MOT Failure on 48 counts. Holy Cr@p No
I'm pretty sure reveresing lights and front fogs are "optional" as it were We had a Discovery, its reversing lights never worked, and was never pulled up in MOT's.... The rear fog is the only mandatory one i believe. But that could be year based, similar to cataytic convertors and side repeaters, i think if its before 1978 then the car doesnt have to have them... or somthing like that :) Another useless piece of information brought you by Quavey

Lights... Some clarification needed
No rear fogs mate, all the light up as they should, and I dont have any LED conversions on it. All very strange... Well im glad it shoudlnt have any rear fogs, that clears some confusion up!

Lights... Some clarification needed
Thanks guys, all the brake lights work (including the spoiler mounted one) So its not bulb failure, or being wired up strangly. I did wonder if it was a relay, needs some attention anyway as its very annoying. Glad all is (almost) normal, just reading that comparisons sheet is lists the JDM cars having rear fogs in the centre panel :-s But thats gotta be wrong, just has 4 clear lights.... Now to the buzzing....!

Lights... Some clarification needed
My Zed has an interesting light set up, just wondering if this is normal. I've had a look on the "jap vs US vs Europe" list and then had a long look at my lights, and mine doesnt match! When I turn the fog lamps on, (main switch, i.e the rotary one is of) the dash lights come on, and what i presumed were the tail lights along with the fog lamps (front lights in the bumper) When the rotary switch is turned to the first position (with the foglamps of) we get dash lights, tail lights and a very dim bulb in foglamp is illuminated In the second position as above with head lights. (smaller lense in the main "bonnet" light) Then full beam works fine from the indicator stalk. The car doesnt appear to have any rear fog lamps, they are ment to be in the centre panel on the rear i belive BUT all i have is four reversing lights?! (is that a UK centre panel?) Indicators are all fine, but the front indicators in the lower bumper have a compartment behind which i assumed was for side lights, but there now appears to be two bulbs in fog lamps in the front bumper?! All on top of this when any lights are illuminated (except brake and reversing) there is a high pitched buzzing from the rear of the car. When the brake lights are illuminated a warning light comes on labelled "lights" on the left hand side of the lower dash. I always assumed this was a self check for the brake lights, but now im not so sure. (didnt old mini's used to do that??) Is this correct, or has somone rewired my car back to front LOL

1.5" Restrictor
Just been looking on the "US vs Japan vs Europe" comparisons list. Does anyone know what the crack is with this restrictor, is it a major issue on jap cars??, just wondering if i should look at having it removed... Thanks Chris
