wiring looms
Hello, am sorting out doing some work on my car, the engine is a 1995tt; the transmission is auto and the body 1992. High on the list is replacing the engine wiring loom. I understand that the wiring loom is no longer made for this year, and not possible to get new. Thus, I am wondering what my options are. What exactly are the differences between the years? for instance I can find a new 1993ttauto loom. Is it worth putting in some aftermarket coil packs like Splitfire's offerings, and changing the injectors to a loom which is available? I know that plug replacememts are available, however I really do wish to replace the entire loom from the ECU back. Many thanks, Kezza.

Advice on soldering irons...
Depends on what you will be doing. for 30 quid, you can probably get an adjusting one. Good, say if you want to solder 0 guage wire then crank it up and if you want to solder delicate components on a PCB's then wind it down. If you will be mainly soldering wires then the cheapie will probably do. I have a butane one, and its invaluable. I also have a real cheap one which does most of the heavy work to save the butane tips. Solder with flux, the wetting agent which allows it to flow and stick onto metals, will eat your tips. This is why I use a cheap one when soldering thick wires as replacement tips are also cheap.

Advice on compression tester
just wondering, how does one go about compression testing? its something I have never tested. Is it a fairly simple matter of plug the tester in, pumping it up and observing the results? Any pointers on how to interpret the results?

Amps and subs
installed them for a living, and as a hobbie. A good ice setup (personal choice...) SubAmp: Good raw Power. http://www.eaudio.co.nz/caliber_ca2000d.htm Sub: Digital Designs - http://www.ddaudio.com JVC Headunits sound very clean and crisp - better than clarion or other expensive brands when run through spectrum analyzers and noise. Main Amp: http://www.eaudio.co.nz/ca475plus.htm DLS front and rears are perfect if you want clarity. The other thing to remember, is that the bass box needs to be tuned. The 300zx is a perfect car for building a sub box in as the shape of the rear window creates a wonderful almost gramophone type effect. In my mates zx, we calculated the interior volume of the car as the second chamber of the subbox and used one window wound down about 1.5" as the second port. Have a look at this piece of software, its very excellent http://www.ht-audio.com/bassbox.htm

Funny Story from my kiwi homeland. We have some 'odd' boy racer laws. 51-year-old treated as 'boy racer' By HELEN PRATTLEY - Waikato Times | Saturday, 4 November 2006 He may be a middle-aged businessman in a flash car, but he's still covered by the boy racer legislation. Helen Prattley reports. "I'm not a boy racer, I'm a car enthusiast." These words from a Tui beer advertisement were yesterday used in the defence of the chairman of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce who was convicted of spinning the wheels of his Mercedes Benz in Mahoe St, Te Awamutu, last December. John Rae, 51, yesterday appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Hamilton District Court, having been found guilty of wheel-spinning under what is known as the "Boy Racer Act". He was fined $450 and disqualified from driving for six months. In an effort to have Rae discharged without conviction, lawyer Stephen Harrop told the judge the legislation was designed for "boy racers who congregate at night in suburban areas to undergo deliberate, sustained loss of traction to impress their like-minded mates, and in the course of that create significant dangers to people and property". He said Rae never intended to spin the wheels of his car and was in complete control of the $250,000 Mercedes CLS 55 AMG while doing so. The car, which left a 27m-long trail of rubber, was impounded by police for 28 days. "Mr Rae is neither a boy, nor on this occasion was he racing," Mr Harrop said. "He did not create a material risk to road safety." He said a conviction would affect Rae's ability to travel overseas, impact on his business, cause him personal embarrassment, harm his reputation, and stop him driving in motorsport competitions. It was therefore out of proportion to the gravity of the offence, Mr Harrop said. But Judge Maze told Rae the purpose of the law was to tackle exhibitionist drivers. "In a sense, yours was exhibitionist driving although I accept you have difficulty accepting that," she said. The judge referred to Rae's previous convictions for careless use of a motor vehicle in 1993 and dangerous driving in 1976, and 17 fines for speeding since 1985. "I think they (the speeding infringements) are indicative of the approach you have applied in the past towards driving safety and your obligations," she said.

Pros and Cons of a late spec Zed..?..
Cheers, was an interesting read. Was interesting about the series r models. Does this imply (http://www.300zx.org.uk/model_variations.htm) that all late models are stronger?

Pros and Cons of a late spec Zed..?..
Do you have any more information on this? 'tis the first I hear about them strengthening the chassis and body. I have heard of the benefits of filling the chassis conduits.

ahh.. good point about the boost... wasn't thinking.- membership
Hello, just subscribed via paypal. mentioned about postal address for a pack? Who do I send these details to? Kerry- Switchable ECU
don't suppose anyone has a map of a valet mode? you know, one with practically 0 boost and a speed limiter set at around 30mp/h? 95tt auto.- Knocking a little
Get yourself a long thin hollow metal tube, like that of an aerial, and attach some soft rubber to it. put something comfy on the other end of the rubber tube so you can put it in your ear. If you can find one, a doctors stethoscope will do nicely. Then poke the end of it around the engine and listen. you can probably find where the knock is the loudest and deduce from there the issue.- Petrol and the smell of it ... :(
i ended up taking the plenum off, replacing the hoses and replacing the clips from the standard spring type to ones tightned with a screwdriver. fixed it. while it was off, also replaced the water hoses, they were about due.- ALC and Mines ECU
am curious, did you take the ALC2 out after your gearbox went pop, or did you fix the gearbox and leave it in? Since getting it fixed, have you had any other issues?- ALC and Mines ECU
Cheers!!- ALC and Mines ECU
Cheers Guys. the gearbox has done about 20000km, reckon i will give it a shot... whats the worst that can happen....harhar...- ALC and Mines ECU
Hello, have been looking around and all I seem to be able to find out about the ALC II (Automatic Line Controller) from HKS references the standard ECU. I have a Mines ECU, will this little device still work? (yes... my car is a auto tt) Does anyone know how this actually works, is it an advantage to have? Cheers.- Bringing a Zed into the UK from NZ
Hello folks, I was hoping someone may be able to help point me in the right direction with regards to bring my 300zx to the UK. Currently, its in New Zealand. It is a 1992 with a 1995 jap motor & transmission in it, done roughly about 24000kms. Its fairly standard, cept it don't have any emmission controls. I've done a bit of tuning of the ECU, put some 'nice' turbos in it and wrote myself a new chip for it, but have left it with a friend with only a mines ECU in it so they don't thrash it too much... What are the likely issues I may face getting it on the road here in the UK? I have access to a very well equipped garage and are not afraid of getting under the hood. I know that I will have to put a speedo, or at least a facard, in with miles/hour. Any other little/big things which might bite me? Has anyone got any good international car shipping people they have used before. Many thanks. - Switchable ECU
