Silly question...... :x:

What turbo's do the 300zx have??

And what is a good - solid replacement?

Thanks in advance.

Solid direct replacement would be reworked stock turbos with 360 degree bearings. If you want an upgrade, then dependant on money, the world's your oyster!

Stock Turbos are Hybrids of the Garret T25's, with a smaller TB22 turbine/exhaust side and 4 bolt design.

Popular upgrades, increasing in size are :

- JWT Sport 500

- Z1 GT525

- Z1 GT535R / JWT 530BB / GT2554R (all the same spec turbo)

- Z1 GT600R / GT2560R / GT28R (all the same spec turbo)

- Z1 GT675RS / GT2860R / GTS8RS / HKS 2530 / JWT 700bb(0.63 AR) (all the same spec turbo)

- Greddy TD04 16G

- Greddy TD04 18G

There is a good range of upgrades available from z1

To be honest i'm in a bit of a pickle about this one myself. I've one through the FAQ's and searched threads and still can't find the answer to the question that i'm most bothered about when it comes to upgrading turbos. To be honest, all i'm bothered about is the spool time. When my stock turbo is on full boost i'm more than happy with the power so i'm not chasing crazy bhp's but what i don't like is how long it takes to get there.

I know that there are ways to get better spool up on stock turbos (eg, induction kit, divorced downpipes, etc) but what i'd love to know, given an identical intake/exhaust system, is which turbo spins up the fastest.

Or am i oversimplifying a complex problem.

The stock turbos spool pretty quickly, and have less lag than other turbocharged cars. There are other factors that can make the car feel laggy though - Engine compression, timing, Fuelling, Vacumn/boost leaks. I've driven many stock zed that feel a lot laggier than other stock examples.

The quickest spooling turbos are the stock turbos becuase they are the smallest. As you go larger, the slower they spool. This can be mostly overcome, as you say, with Bigger manifolds, Divorced Downpipes and decats. With these add-ons you could have a turbo like the GT525 spooling quicker than the stock turbo and making more power all the way through its range too, or the JWT 530BB spooling like stock and making a LOT more power.

There are other upgrades that help too - Losing weight in the drivetrain (Lightweight pulleys, flywheels and propshafts) all help with spool response. As does the proper setup of an electronic boost controller, which allows more response over boost jets or the stock solenoids.

Its also worth noting that although a bigger turbo will spool slower it still makes more power as it does. So even if a Bigger turbo is only making 8psi by 3000rpm, while a smaller turbo is already making 12psi, the bigger turbo can still making more power at that point.

the 530BB's have my name all over them... once i get some more ££££ together :D

530bb's spool slower than stock, but when I got mine fitted I also went for Greg Dupree downpipes and manifolds along with HKS actuators. The spool up on these babies is now the same or maybe slightly quicker than stock.

I have reworked stock turbos with 360 degree bearings and divorced down pipes.

Spool up is super fast and I'm at a full bar boost by 2000 rpm!

Sounds like edk83 has the sort of setup i'm after.

At the moment i've got an Apexi intake cone and a Greddy profec B. Sounds like what I need is the stock tubs re-conditioned with 360 deg bearings and get divorced down pipes, a better exhaust and hi-flow cats (its a 96 and i can't be bothered putting cats back on every year for an MOT. Would a lightened flywheel or upgraded IC's make much of a difference?

Dave

a lighter flywheel may not make a huge difference on its own but combine it with a one piece prop lighter pulleys etc and it will make a great difference.

I would be looking at reworking my stock turbo's too, what is the difference with 360 bearings (sorry silly question but new to turbo's)..

360 bearing is just a collar which holds the bearing all the way around (360degress) instead of the 270degress you get with the stock internals. Just helps with wear.

360 bearings dont help with spool up. As Jimmy says its just a reliablity improvement.

Ball bearing turbos however do have less friction which helps with spool up.

I have the JWT 530 bb's at 14psi at the momment, aint put my foot down yet as still running in engine, cant wait though ha ha and yes I have supporting mods.

Trouble with the reworked stock tubs is that they are only good for about 18psi / 450hp tops

My plan was for a reliable 400hp and 17psi is enough to see that.

My flywheel is stock but with an rps clutch, lighter single shaft prop.

Intercoolers are a must as intake temps will be far too high with stock ones and the power will drop lots.
