we are thinking of getting a dog we were after a small dog who wont take over our home and will fit in my tool box:slap:. we agreed on a pug i really like them but i watched "that" dog program the one that had all those KC dogs with problems, i found it quite distressing and put me off a pug but the family really want one. Does anyone know if all pugs have that breathing problem highlighted on the program and after what they said about the kennel club alot of owners are not registering their dogs would you go for one that isn't KC registered

I bought a shitzu for the Mrs about 6 months ago and honestly he's a laugh a minute.

Iv'e allways had big dogs and thought little ones where just yappy little scrotes until we got this.

I'm sure they are a member of the pug family.

my mate has a british bulldog and its a nighmare, cant walk them too much, got to keep them cool, cant get them agitated and its all down the the breathing, pugs are the same, they are engineered to look like that and will suffer heart murmers and so on due to not being able to breath properly, the more highly bread the worse they are, so if you find a cheap one that isnt a very good breed it will be better than a highly bread one

I'm not a breeder but a pet food retailer and pretty good nutritionalist..I would take that programme with a pinch of salt but do be aware of the respiratory problems of any dog with a 'pushed in' face. My choice would be a miniature schnauzer, a dog not a bitch. As with any breed look at the breeder, ask to see both parents (the sire may have been imported) but the breeder will be able to show you both sets of papers. If you have a choice in the litter look vary carefully, you want the strongest one, not the runt who will probably be the most appealing because of his vulnerable look. Remember this dog will soon become a family member not just a pet. Insurance is a must. Read what you get, don't just pick the cheapest.

yeah i watched that and was very disturbed by some of the breeders attitude's towards the problem also !

I have an alsatian (thurabread) but no papers, but judging by the way some have been deliberatel'y manipulating the shape of there rear!

makes me think sometimes ur better off with just a pure breed as such

(ie no papers) but parents both good examples of the breed in question:D

certainly changed my opinion on the kennel club though:rolleyes:

The Problem is inbreed with them, Thats what happens when you mess around with nature, Same as spinal problems with Rodeasion Ridge backs and hip problems with German Sheapards. Although pugs do have a very good nature when it come to kids and familys and they dont Cast as much as other dogs witch also makes then ideal apartment dogs. Dont always believe those programs either.

My mates got a bichon frise, not my cup of tea but they don't cast so that a bonus.

Most 'pure breed' dogs have some sort of health issues, Cross breeds are much less prone to health problems.

Had an Alsatian, that had to be put down at the age of 7 due to hip problems and the nerves going to the back legs.

We now have 2 cross breeds now both several years old, they seem to be bomb proof! Every year the usual vet check and always told in excellent health.

Visit a local rescue center, see if anything there takes your fancy, both our dogs are rescue and we've had no problems.

yeah i vouch for the cross breed too after having some pure breed spaniels (just like the TV prog fitting and seizures owing to the skull being too small)....we got a slovakian pointer (basically a weimaraner cross with a rough/wire hair pointer)...ok its a bigger dog but so mellow and easy going tough as nails.....dont bother with bitches...oh no they are quite frankly bitches and will fook your life up :D

here are my two jaffa and nelly, jaffa the brindle one is a son to nelly and they are fantastic around people other dogs and love kids.

Hope this helps

I don't know what you are refering to, but if your 3 abusive comments are directed at me, I think you need to rethink your attitude.

Obviously as a new user on this forum, you might have missed the whole "edit" thing.

If you had took the time to read the whole post, you would see I have quoted another poster who refers to a West Highland Terrier.

If you could read the part at the bottom, you would see that I edited due to my pictures not attaching properly. I was trying to attatch pictures of the Westy puppy that I recently bought my girl.

If you were not refering to me, maybe you would like to explain to the members what three consecutive, pointless abusive posts are all about.

Because if you had bothered to read our POR, then you would see that is considered impolite...........

As a new user with single figure posts, may I suggest you wind your neck in sharpish, grow up and get a grip of yourself. With a stinking attitude like that I dare say you will be headed for a ban........

OK - so I have seen that I was actually replying to your post.

I understand that you may have failed to read my whole post, so therefore may have been confused as to what I was trying to achieve, but if you hadn't fired off 3 quick fire abusive posts, and asked a question, you would not have made yourself look like a muppet.

Remember - Flaming = bad, Being polite = good, Abusing from the safety of a monitor = TROLL!!!

Jack Russell's are quite a small, fun breed and have a good life expectancy, though some can be highly strung.

I've got a staff and like dannyzx said they are amazing with other animals and people/kids, despite what the press say about them. As you said probably a bit big for what your wanting, mines only 7 and a half months....
