How free-flowing are the Zs airbox inlet tracts and the airbox itself

I am quite happy in not fitting a cone filter to my Z, but more considering fitting a better panel filter. Just wondering if anyone's running a freer flow panel filter with raised boost.

Thanks

Good good. So a decent panel filter with a boost level of 14PSi, all should cope well?

Thanks. I've not had the airbox apart for a while, iirc, there are 2 panels inside it right? So I'll need 2 of the K&N elements.

I'm trying to think off the top of my head what's in there, i thought it was only one panel. Is yours in two sections, one either side?

That's what I can think. Because I don't drive the car much and not in dirty conditions, I've not replaced them since having the car. I am sure they are ok, but I want something a little more capable if I am to run higher boost.

Isn't that the case with all aftermarket filters though? They are all oil impregnated, ITG, K&N and many others?

K&N use oil soaked filters so could cause contamination of the afm!

Correct, I would only consider using a dry type filter as there is the potential of microscopic oil droplets being transferred to the element in the afm.

Is it really that restrictive though? I've always been a little concerned about fitting pop chargers. Dunno why. These pre-wetted?

They are Dry cone filters, and nearly every other zed out there is running some form of pop sharger.

A correctly oiled K&N panel filter will not contaminate the AFM and they are very effective filters, probably second only to Apexi.

I have a K&N panel filters, they are dry and were when new.

Hi Andy, what source did you get the information from?

Is it worth taking the risk?

Hi Si,

Yes, two panel filters required - I'd recommend either K&N or A'PEXi. If going for a pop charger I can not recommend A'PEXi highly enough - superb filtration qualities and high flow rate. A'PEXi filters (both panel and cone) are dry-type filters and can be washed in water to clean. No oiling required unlike with the K&N filters.

As you know, I can get both cone and panel A'PEXi filters. The cone filter costs £62.50 plus p+p and I need to check on the panel cost as I don't get asked for these very often.

Regards,

Dan

PS - I've seen some stock air boxes with holes drilled in to them to increase the air intake ... Not too sure on the effectiveness of that though ...

Someone posted a link up last year of an independant test on filters and the A'pexi cone filter DTA sells was by far the best. I'll try and find the link.

What ever you do, do not run one of the stell mesh filters, such as the blitz, i saw a report a few years ago that show they have a very very poor filtration rate
