a man-eating shark is a shark that eats humans

I believe you can use hyphens to break up words into their syllables or simply to join strings of word. I don't think there's any hard/fast rule about them being used. It's more of a visual thing for type setting.

brother-in-law if you typed brotherinlaw as one word it shows it as incorrect but when you hyphenate it, it shows you are using it in the correct context

It can be a hyphen or a dash.

A hyphen can either split a word at the end of a line to make it carry on to the follow-

ing line, or can separate words such as double-barrelled names, or can tie two words together so they make better sense (eg. double-barrelled, two-thirds, twenty-five).

A dash can be used - as I'm using it here now - to add extra information into a sentence. Typically, you see the main part of the sentence first with an extra bit at the end - just like this.

There are also em-dashes and en-dashes (especially in Microsoft Word): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dashhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dash

It can also separate ranges and a whole host of other stuff.
