A quick question. My split rims are off for refurb and are 90% complete. He is now bolting them back together. Unfortunately (doh) he didn't note which had the bigger offset front or rear. As a rule of thumb what usually has the bigger offset on our cars front or rear. I need to call him tomoz (sat) so he can start putting them back together.

depends, are they the same width?

Offset depends on width as well. As a rule of thumb though, the rears will have higher figures. So, say you have a wheel of about 9" wide, you'd look at having offset of around +40 +/-10%, the fronts with something like an 8" wide wheel, then around 25 +/- 10%. But, you can specify what offset you want regarding width and horizontal position on the hub.

 

If I had the cash, I'd order custom wheels with my own width and offset tailor-made for my car.

8.5j front 9.5 rear (if I rember right) it may be 7.5 front 8.5 rear

So in simple terms does that mean the back offset having a bigger number would stand out less from the hub than the front (wheel width not withstanding?)

So Si your pic the measurement of offset as indicated. A lower number would give more metal on the wheel pushing it farther from the hub? So when the guy is putting my splits back together for the rear (wider wheels) these would have the thicker section of metal at the at the wheel centre. So a lower offset or the other way around?

The higher the number, the closer the wheel face is to the hub rim makes up for that. When it goes negative the centre line of the wheel sits outward of the hub.

 

Just think of the centreline of the wheel in relation to the hub.

BUT, you could have equal offsets all round, just different widths. The fronts are unlikely to be a higher positive number though.

Yep got wider rears and the offsets are different. I wish to god he had noted which centres came off which wheels.

You should be able to tell. Yours are 3 peice wheels I take it. The rear wheels, the widest inner and outter rim will be from the same wheel, the wheel centre (hub) will be narrower also. The fronts will generally have a wider hub, but narrower inner and outter rims.

2 piece and the rears have a real deep dish.

You might find that yours are equal offsets which means the wheelfaces are all the same. Put them all together and look at them.

Unfortunately im 50 miles away from the re-furber but he does say they are different offsets. Im really pissed off that he hasn't noted which was which. Not rocket science is it. Not as pissed off as I will be if he puts them all back together I fit them and they are wrong.

If he didn't know, I hope he knows the difference between offset and width. lol
