iv got a 91 Jap TT, (manual of course ;) )

notices today the rubbery standar spoiler is coning away from thre boot.

its the part where the badges are, which are all rubber aswell?

so the rubber bit is coming away, and is rusty underneath!

ive seen other Z's with different tailgate, as if thers an extra bit to follow the lines of the rear lights.

ive got this pic (off StellaZ trust doesnt mind) which is the shape mine is.

if you look at this one you see what i mean:

is there something i can replace the rusty bit with? or do i need a new tailgate completly?

they different? or just the lights part?

Featured Replies

They are all the same 2+2 and 2+0 being the only differences and that was in length only. The red one just has the perspex panel on the trunk which was fitted to US spec NA cars and offered on all Z32s after 1996.

If your tailgate's rusty, then I'd replace it. By covering it up, your harbouring more problems.

Tailgates are all the same, different between 2+0 and 2+2 I think but only in size, someone might correct me there?

Yes the stock foam spoilers are shite they all fill up with water and fall to bits.

Remove your spoiler and it will look like the pic above (with the bumper still on)

Then you can see just how bad the rust is and if its worth fixing and fitting a new spoiler or just waiting for a whole tailgate to come up for sale.

Perspex Strip is about £50 from Nissan, although ofcourse you'll need the holes in top of the tailgate filled and the entire thing resprayed as well.

Tailgate skin or spoiler that encorporates one was the way I went.

My stock spoiler was knackered but I was lucky in that there was no rust in my tailgate

cheers.

cant understand how they get rusty there? thats the only part on the entire car?

so i can remove this part thats bad (its exactly where the Fairlady Z badge goes on the left)

can i still have the standard spoiler AND the perspex?

i quite like the spoiiler! (just shame its rubber lol)

No the standard spoiler wraps around so you cant use the perspex stip with it

There are lots of options tho

It goes rusty there as the foam spoiler holds water

hmm...

i was thinking of geting the perspex strip, as the standard metal strip is rusty.

then using the spoiler ASWELL, even tho the spoiler wraps over the perspex, hiding it.

surely it will work like that? you just wont see the perspex, as the spoiler is over it.

or even cut an inch off the standard rubber strip, to show the perspex?

get me?

Once its rusty its shot imo, your better off looking for another tailgate.

You can get fiberglass replacement spoilers, not really sure if you would be able to cut it right though to have that and the perspex stip.

It would be easier AND better to replace the tailgate with a non-rusty one. Sounds like a bodge job you're wanting to do and the perspex strip holds absolutely no structural integrity what so ever. Shame Nissan made it of the stuff rather than polycarbonate.

think some of you may be confused,

the tailgate in general is fine.

its just a small section, couple of centimeters which is rusty.

the section is the part which people replace with the perspex.

honesty once you take the spoiler off you will more likely see more damage. then what your currently seeing. the foam spoiler has bonded in screws which will have gone rusty too. which would in turn start to rot the tailgate from under the spoiler . the first thing you will now about it is when water starts to pour in from under the spoiler where it has rotted right through.

take the old foam spoiler off. and if you still like the shape replace with a fibreglass replica one which is exactly what i did.

I'm loving the look of the de-spoilered red car above. Anyone want to swap tailgates?? lol

My cars got a fibreglass replica one but the quality of it is rubbish, if you look across it the surface is really bumpy, are they all like that?

they should be finished by the bodyshop to get a flat finish.

ok thanks for the comments.

il take the spoiler off and see how bad it is.

just as i was bored, i edited the picture, the green part is the strip i refer to,

and iv drew a red line on the bad section.

how do you remove the standard strip? where the perspex would replace?

imagine easy to see when the spoiler is removed.

There is no strip there as standard. The spoiler is one piece and covers the entire area. THats literally what the boot looks like when you remove the spoiler.

All thats there is some edging strips which pull off.

Here is mine after I pulled of my spoiler (which had a fibreglass stock replica and had been resprayed previously beneath the spoiler):

and my first zed :

and this is the complete rear spoiler...err on a Scenic :

ah...

cheers legrath :)

i thaught there was a standard strip that could be removed.

how does the perxpex one attach then? it goes ontop the standard strip i take it?

It bolts directly onto the tailgate, but its best to use sealant as well to stop fumes and moisture getting behind it.

Going to remove my standard spoiler soon it looks rusty at the bottom not sure if this is the tailgate or not or do the standard spoilers have a metal skin to them.
