Hi guys, im in the process of taking my engine out to do piston rings and bearings etc, while its out im going to remove the air con while im at it as i never use it and it needs re-gassing anyway, just wondered what else i can do while its out, i might be wrong but a guy i spoke to said about egr removal? is he right? if so any advice or links to pages with step by step instructions on how to do it and what it actually does anyway would be appreciated, thanks

EGR is the exhaust gas recirculation, it was made by nissan for emission regulations, its effectively a diaphram that allows a varying amount of exhaust gas to circulate back into the inlet so it can be more completely combusted.

Removing allows more power as there can be more oxygen combusted, reduces potential leaks and poor running (old and lazy diaphram), easier access to the back of the engine while in situ!

I would think it might effect emissions, i'm not sure to what extent tho

There are a couple of jobs you should consider while its out. One is a top end bypass which does away with all the pipework undr the plenum, 2nd is to replae all rubber pipes at the back of the engine, i.e., heater hoese etc., and 3rd, change the rack bushes, these cost a couple of quid but are b@stards to change when the engind is in. In fact you have to drop the cross member to do it. They stop your steering rack flexing when on the move.

Do a search on google for Mjp motorsports - mike fenley, he is the clubs oem parts specialist!

how did you go about prop and gearbox as thats what im still to do?

If you are just taking the engine out, then the prop and gearbox does not really need touching apart from unbolting from the engine. Also, if its an auto, make sure you unbolt the torque converter from the plate with the starter ring on, and when you remove the engine, it should stay still mounted on the gearbox shaft, and thus no fluid loss. To get the engine off the gearbox you will need to drop the front crossmember. First mark the steering splined joint to ensure it goes back in the same position as the rack which is attached to the crossmember will drop down also. Make sure your engine crane is up to the weight, it is a big unit and cheap / lightweight engine hoists can be tipped over with the weight of a Zed engine.

i did drop the box and remove the prop because im looking for a new re-con box (mannual) and lightend prop, im in no rush to get it back on the road so thought i would do the works, when it comes to lifting the enigine wheres best to lift it by and is it best to use chains or big rope?

You can put them through the Plenum, one each side, and loop back to the crane.

Chains or Rope, just make sure its strong enough - Weight of engine is around 250kg.
