UK Speed Cameras to Monitor Every Stretch of Road

After a series of trials, the British Home Office is set to approve the SPECS3 “distance over time speed measuring device.” SPECS3 uses an ISDN connection to transmit data between any two cameras in the entire road network, without the need for the expensive dedicated connection. The system can also track drivers as they change lanes and as they switch between different roads and highways. The Transport and Climate Change commission estimated that new cameras could monitor every driver on 31,136 miles of principal rural and urban roads for £443,687,656 ($769,693,415). Chicken feed. The commission noted that “enforcing the 70 MPH limit using SPECS would pay for itself within around two years.” (Between 2000 and 2005, a single camera in Nottinghamshire generated 76k tickets worth £4.2m/$7.2m). Once established nationwide, a central government Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) server will store records on all vehicle movements for five years. Work on the data center in north London began in 2005; officials expect real-time, nationwide tracking capability by January.

In all honesty I dont care one bit. You know the rules of the road. You know the speed limits, if you have a problem sticking to them then you shouldn't frankly be on the road.

It's nowt to do with Road Safety and it's nowt to do with Security and it's nowt to do with Terrorism. It is a scheme to monitor and tack every UK citizen wherever you go, how fast, where you stop and any other vehicles doing the same trip as you. (judged by association with others? club meets, local Lodge, religious groups, political rallies - the mind bogles...........) Thus it's a Communist dream. Build a system under the auspices of 'safety'. Let it surveil the population, let it generate billions of pounds to pay for itself and ultimately pay for total coverage of the UK.

Brilliant in it's sinister methodology. Worth bearing in mind that in Canada 9 years ago the Speed Cameras across the nation were removed because, wait for it, the voting public didn't want them. My friend was a Supt. in Toronto and told me. Now that's the difference betwen democracy and Totalitarianism. My friends this is what the UK has become and it only gets worse from here - if we let them.

Yup, i worked in Canada (Richmond) for a bit and some of the guys i was with were telling me about all the speed cameras that were installed years ago. A while after they were installed another political party stated that one of their policies would be to remove all fixed cameras if they were voted in office.

Suffice it to say, i didn't see any fixed speed/safety cameras in all the time i was in Richmond. They do still use red light cameras and some mobile ones. It's also amazing that the stats for RTA's didn't seem to change before and after the cameras were installed. Like you say, it was all down to the voting public!

Nobody seems to speed in Richmond anyway cause they have traffic lights every 200 yards anyway. Lol.

On a side note, I did see at least 1 Z32 while i was there though, and a guy in my office had an immaculate Z31.

I use the A14 every day and they've now got averaging cameras on there. That's a joke, you can't do any more than about 55mph, let alone break the 70mph limit! What a waste of cameras.

As I said in other threads - things can change but not by bar room barristers - it takes courage, sacrifice and action. I have never seen the will in the UK and that's why the people we pay to run the country do this with the power we've let them escalate.

It is totally excessive. I know there are speed limits to be adhered to, but this is completely singling out the motorist and making money out of them. Doing 80mph on a motorway is a minor offence, not something that one should be penalised with through via constant fines, license endorsements, bans etc.

It's has 'easy money' written all over it which is why all the payback values are so clear.

If anyone drives on the M42 on a regular occasion will know, it's how much WORSE the variable speed cameras make driving. Everyone is constantly watching their speedo and not the road. It's constantly disrupting the flow of traffic, people braking, accelerating. It's not only dangerous to do that, it's also more environmentally unfriendly.

This project has been talked about for some years now.

If that is true i'll be leaving the country, it's up the shitter as it is without having to worry about not only where your moneys being saved and if you'll ever get it back, bailing out the banks, the police pulling you over 24/7 and now this.

Shocking :(

With all that's happening to the UK and the global economy at this time it's reprehensible that this Govt is more interested in spying on the public and penalising them than dealing with the greater issues of morality, crime, gangsterism, illegal immigrants, sex traders, drugs and the radicalistion of UK citizens by Eastern religious ideologies.

It's best summed up as 're-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic after she hit the iceberg'. Still if it brings in some much needed revenue who cares? Even Chief Constables are saying that speed cameras are such a waste of time and maintenance that they are stopping spending on their upkeep. My point is proved.

ps I'd leave the UK tomorrow with no regrets except, wrong age, not got 500,000 in the bank, no relatives there, not wanting to start a business and no job arranged - apart from that I'm smokin'. Oh yes, there's an opening in Tehran but I think it's a short term prospect - well it was when I spoke with my Mossad mate last year..................

What a bunch of ****ers, all the tories have to do get in say they will not install these, hang on they are getting in anyway:rolleyes:

Yes........

......and no...;)

I'm all for enforcing the 30mph limit through urban areas; it's there to reduce accidents, children being hit, noise etc.

However, apart from being against the law, there is nothing wrong/reckless/dangerous about driving at 100mph on a clear, dry and empty motor way. Who are you harming? Modern cars and well maintained sports cars (like ours:rolleyes:) are more than capable of handling the speed with the ability to stop/steer etc should the need arise.

(NB not a confession - just a theory;))So if I choose to drive to Cornwall, at 7am on a dry, sunny Saturday morning on an empty M4/M5 at 100mph; does that mean "I should not be driving?"

I don't think so!!! If it's so dangerous to drive at 100+ why is it still legal in safety conscious Germany?

Richard:cool:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

If Speed Kills then every F1 driver and MotoGP rider would be dead. So clearly it means Inappropriate Speed Kills - maybe......................

If there's an Inappropriate speed limit in force it may be illegal to break it but it also may not be 'inappropriate for the road or conditions. Try telling that to an unmanned camera.

i think you guys have hit it on the head Peranaman and my political buddy Richard :)

i almost belly laughed when i read this - polls show labour is on their way out. what can the govt do to win people over... hmm..... i know...... lets PISS THEM OFF EVEN MORE than they already are!!! in a way this speed camera thing is good, it should hopefully accellerate the speed at which these f***-witted retards leave the government. by God i hate them.

..etc... ;)

exactly and there the places i have been done! LOL

London camera officials did admit, however, that 5600 tickets were sent to motorists who were completely innocent.

And no-one picked up on this comment, I can only imagine how many others there are that chose not to contest the ticket.

Well this is the way I see it.

Aside from the normal comments already said this will be another excuse for an even lower police presence on the roads.

The fun bit is that we will see sections of road that are between cameras turned into drag/race strips. Go whatever speed you want as long as you don't pass camera two!

There will be a huge market for burger vans parked halfway between these Spy Cameras so that after a standing 1/4 mile burn - a quick T stop and a burger then continue sedately, thus bring your average speed down to 4 mph................................

Might start a franchise called ' SPECS Savers' or something.

LMAO

Gonna go get me a burger van and cash in on this :D

In washinton dc and parts of florida califonia they had to stop using the speed camaras as the people said it encroced there civale libertys so if enough people in the great uk got together and started an apeal to our c/liberty you never no

Got a horrible feeling that all our speed limits will overnight be turned into maximum / minimum limits so that you will only be able to travel at speed the GatStapo want you to drive. Too fast you're nicked too slow - you're nicked. "Papers please, schnell, schnell"

i agree

i got 3 points for doing 55 on the a1 in nottingham at 3am, and i was the only one on the bloody road

what a piss take

if every one is maxed at 70 mph, you will end up with total grid lock

if somone is doing 70mph in the inside lane, then no one will be able to get passed, and the two outside lanes will be empty ??

you will end up with the HGV syndrome

ever been stuck behind a truck over taking another one, and it takes him about 3 miles to do it ??

thats because there all limited to 56 mph

its just another stealth TAX

It is criminalising ordinary citizens, my 70 year old neighbour got a fine and three points for doing 33mph in a 30 at 10.30pm, you have to ask how does this benefit society?

The true test is this. Ask Local Authorities and Camera Partnerships if they would maintain and install cameras IF there was no monetary fine BUT only penalty points to be issued? You'd soon find that the 'drive to reduce injuries and fatalities on our roads' would disappear like the morning mist.

Everyone in Road Safety ( I was one) knows that inappropriate speed accounts for less than 2% of RTAs yet speed gets almost 90% of all energy to punish - why? Because the technology exists to penalise.

As I've said before 'when you have a big enough hammer, everything tends to look like a nail'
