well just had an electrician come around to have a look at why the Z was running a bit lumpy, i thought it was due to the loom but with all the parts tested its turned out to be the ignition amplifier unit.

The guy said they should be easy enought to find and an easy problem to sort.

Does anyone have one or know where i could find one?

Thanx Sonia xx

Is it the PTU (Power Transister Unit) you mean, that is basically an ignition timing unit and are prone to going. It is a little black box located on the left cam cover.

If so, easily sourced. I would try SWZ in the traders section for starters.

HTH :)

as above, only trust mec's that work on 300's, or u could get a big bill for nothing gained.

ask here on the forum for a local garage that has a good knowledge on a zed.

Hi Sonia, i have a spare ptu my email is below if you need contact me there. Cheers Jay

If its the ptu the series 2 are supposed to be non breakable

Yep, chances are it's the series 1 that's gone. It'll be in the same location (front left cam cover) but it's silver and about 3-4 inch square.

To be truthful the correct ptu comes off a series 4 car that is the upgraded one, I don't know where the series 2 blarney came from!

I have a series 1 ptu for £20 delivered if you want it?

try cleaning the connectors mate!

ive just done mine now, the PTU connectors were so corroded, all green and smelly.

would even start the car!

knife to scrape the gunk off, wire wool, then WD40.

or if its the actual unit thats gone, just get one second hand off here :)

Actually the pic is slightly incorrect, the it is late 94 the ptus changed over, unless it was earlier in the states?

I think they're referring to second series of PTU, not in line with the model revisions.

True I think some people believe the PTUs are upgraded on series II cars, when it is the 2nd series of PTU that is fault free :)

kool chears, all i know is the electrician that came around did all his tests and said it was the ignition amplifier.

If thats the same thing as the PTU should be easy to sort but not sure what series mine is or which i should go for.

Yeh, Ignition Ampflier is PTU. All 89-93 came with a series 1 PTU. 94 onwards came with Series 2 PTU.

Both will work, but the Series 2 is much more reliable.

Can pick up a used Series 1 PTU for about £30. A series 2 PTU will cost you around £120 I believe.

SWZ will have at least a dozen or so Used tested PTU's on the shelf. If you want a New Series 2 PTU then best people to speak to would be DTA or MJP. (Contact details are all in the forum traders section)

Kool chears, you got an email addy?

Someone has already said this, but try un plugging it and cleaning the connectors on the PTU and the plugs that go into it, mine wouldn't start, but after cleaning the PTU up it was fine. You might want to just upgrade it, but if money is tight then try cleaning it up first mate......

yea was me who said.

tbh i dont really see the need to upgrade from the series 1 PTU to the series 2 PTU.

if the series 1 PTU is broken, try cleaning, if still broke replace.

seems a lot of money for a series 2 PTU when they do the same.

or if you have money to burn feel free :)

The ptu has a fault inside it, it saves the potential drama of sods law, i.e. it will break on the M1 in hurricane style weather, plus also having an inferior spark on a turbo engine is not good :(

Its a reliablity upgrade. The S1 PTU's are flawed, In the U.S the Nissan dealers did a recall of the S1 PTU's and replaced them with S2, but unfortuantly UK and Japan did'nt.

The price difference is becuase of comparing a New PTU with a 2nd hand one.

Have a look at us ebay. I recently bought a series 2 ptu complete with adapter loom for $30 and $20 postage.

£27 quid total and its spot on!
