What will I get for doing 112mph on the M40?...

Just got pulled for doing 112mph on the M40..Two cops in an unmarked Honda! with video camera caught me as I turned off the motorway.

They said my average speed was 112.45mph over 1.8 miles and reckoned I was braking during this time, so I must have been doing over 120mph.

What sort of ban am I likely to get, and how much of a fine? My licence was clean for the last few years...until now.

I would imagine your ban would be a few weeks rather than months with maybee a £300ish fine It all depends on the magistrate on the day. I got 6 pts and £175 for doing 100.9 on a motorway on a bike..

Remember the speed gun cop who was run down and killed the other week? well they wern't so cocky then were they, we were all meant to feel sorry when we watched the news.

I think not.

Good luck

Paul

I had a bit of a lucky break a few years ago, got done for 114 on the M6 and got 3 points and £150.00 fine. Had a good lawyer who convinced them i needed my license and it was early morning, no traffic etc.

However all cases are different, depends who you get on the bench on the day, good luck.

A few years back I got 3pts & £90 for doing 110 on the A1 near Stevenage, in the middle of the afternoon. I had to go to court and I convinced them that I was late for work, needed my licence to earn a living (letter from the boss, shift work etc). These days they are serious ... you will need to do the same (and of course be very, very sorry etc) .... Expect a large fine & perhaps a short ban - IF you convince them !

Sorry to here your news Jez. Going back around five years I was caught on a sunday afternoon doing 100.3 on the M3. The magis gave me six points and £230 fine. They also told me if I was caught agin I would loose my licence. A few months later I was, doing 70 in a 50 and got a 6 month ban.

Andy ps advise sounds good. Good luck!

Jez,

I'm sorry to hear your news.

Theres only a couple of things you can do:

1. Seriously lick arse to the magistrate, say how sorry you are etc...

2. Prove to them that by taking away your licence they'll be taking away you'll livelihood too.

If you can get you're employers to vouch for you that a car is an essential part of your job then they'll think twice about a ban.

If you can prove this you have a good chance of walking away with just points and a fine.

All the best of luck.

Are you sitting comfortably??? Then I'll begin...

Once upon-a-time, there was this naughty little boy who couldn't resist welding his accelerator pedal to the floor with just about any excuse necessary...

Went through a phase of getting done to the point where I should have had the book thrown at me. Was stopped on Sealand road (Chester) A55 in a metro van on my way back down south by a traffic pig in a Disco. When he came upto the window and asked my "Do you know why I've stopped you Sir?", I replied "Yes officer, for talking on a cellular phone whilst driving!"...what a Leo Wanker!!! "Besides that Sir, I've been following you for a few miles now and you've been averaging 85 mph in a 50 zone!". Roger that, my first fixed penalty. That should have been a court job but he took pity and reduced the speed so I'd get away with just a fixer.

Right, next one, a few months later in a 2.8 injection trevor trouser press (Capri Ghia, Rodney!), M25, again on my way back to work in Dagenham, stopped for doing 101.25 mph. Bastards caught up with me on the M11. Court date imminent in Epping Forest...shit!

Next incident, same week I'm due in court, maybe the week b4. I'm back home in de Wales commuting to Mancland on a training course, drop the woman back at the house and proceed off to a chippy for some tukka. Go flying past a trap in a 30 zone doing 45 mph, also got breathalised as I'd just had a pint in the pub on the way home...only a pint b4 anyone starts kicking off!

So here is the worst case scenario, 3 points already on me license, due in court in a few days for speeding on M25, but now have another pending 3 points which for non-geniuses totals 6 black marks. So, I go to court in Epping all suited up, shitting my boxers. I'm sat in the back of the court waiting for my turn, I tell the court clerk the fairy tail and he intervenes when they call me and suggests to the Mag. that I am allowed an adjournment to get myself a good solicitor to which the whole court agrees.

Moral of this story so far, if you've been done for more than 30 over the speed limit, get a bloody good solicitor, otherwise get banned, heavy fine and loads of points on yer green piece when you come off the ban. I should have been banned, she grovelled on my behalf which cost me 250 quid, I should have been banned instantly but they took mercy, ended up with 5 points which took me to 11, one off a ban, fined 230 quid and sent packing! PHEW!!!

Was so paranoid driving back to Dagenham on the way back to work, had to drive along the M25, and A13 which is spot a gap more than 20 feet long between GATSO's all the way home.

Solicitor advised me to take it easy, but she wasn't holding out much hope of me not getting done within the next 3 years before first points would come off...did make it! Now have no points at all.

Good luck matey!

Tim

;-)

...a grin like someone has installed a coat hanger in yer gob!!!

Laughs uncontrollably...

you lot are all so jammy ive been caught twice doing over the ton and twice ive been banned although the second time i was luckier than the guy who was in the front of our six strong convoy comin back from a club in leeds he was in the old tickford design 2l maestro injection turbo. he still holds the record for that stretch of m62 he was banned for 2 years for being clocked at 165mph we were pulled five miles from where we were clocked by a team of range rovers on the hard shoulder waiting for us and ive never seen a more angry bunch of rozzers in my life but thinking about what they said to us then they were probably right

Time to get a bulk buy of some stealth paint I think. That'll screw the radars.

Actually, this is not as dumb as it sounds. US steatlh bombers have a special type of matt black coating that absorbs or diffracts radar. Apparantly, this stuff is tricky to get ahold of - anyone got any contacts ? :-)

Sorry to hear the news. If you're thinking of getting a solicitor make sure it's one who specialises or its a waste of money.

Following on from the stealth idea, because the Z is so swoopy in its styling, a radar beam would not be reflected back to the radar gun anyway - now hold that thought...just for a second... and let go. Sh*t, reality sucks!

the matt black paint is not to affect the radar, it is to affect laser. black absorbs light, and matt is much less reflective.

radar is radio/sound waves, which require a good reflective surface to get a signal bounce back from. However, as the waves are so broad, they almost always get bounced back.

laser is light waves, which still require a good reflecting surface, but are affected by colour. They are also a much smaller wave band. This means that when they are reflected, they need to be directed back in the right direction a lot more reliably.

The hardest cars to target with laser guns are black, the easiest are white. (wish i'd known before i bought white...)

This is why laser guns are targetted at headlamps and number plates, as they almost always face or reflect forwards.

Craig, you should be working for NASA or something, you're wasted mate!

Could you diagnose what's wrong with my Hotpoint Aquarius washing machine, the info-bubble has packed up...any ideas???

[-)

David,

Contact Hotpoint? Customer Services? erm, The washing machine repair man, everybody knows someone that knows someone that's a washing machine repair man!

Everyone else,

You need to paint your car pink with yellow spots....have you ever seen a pink car with yellow spots pulled over by the police?

......I rest my case.....

Stealth Paint.....pah.....

Matty. (and for the record my car is not pink nor does it have yellow spots)

Nevermind "Stealth Paint", it doesn't work anyway, the yanks have lost loads of them in conflicts...

Better idea, go and buy a second hand Stealth bomber...would probably be more reliable in the long run and cost less overall to maintain than a Z.

Signed

Mr Grumpy Bastard

;-(

AndyP,

If you really want some you can buy it from:

http://www.jamradar.com/ram.htm

They do a paint or a wax you can apply

Let me know how you get on.

(I do not endorse the use of this product or gaurantee its effectiveness) ;-)

George,

Great site!

The one stop anti-cop shop.....

:o)

Matty.

Now I am intrigued. With a healthy dose of scepticism I can believe the paint could have an effect, but the wax .....

Of course as Craig mentioned the most significant area on a Z is probably the number plate and I don't doubt that an 'anti-radar' number plate is totally illegal in the UK, just like the supposed anti-photograph ones.

Maybe we should all just become responsible !!

If you have AA cover you can get a free solisitor from them. I got one for speeding a few years back and it really helped.

Jez.

I must be the luckiest of all caught speeding. 106MPH on the M1 and got an on the spot fine £40.

I was travelling from Essex to Plymouth on Thursday M25 - M4 - M5 - A38, there are a shit load of cops sitting on top of bridges, just lettin ya all know in case you're down that way.

Grant,

How did you manage that then, did you go down on the copper that nicked you...and swallow aswell???

]-)

you guys live in the wrong country, got caught doing 140mph in a 70 mph zone in johannesburg a few years ago and got away with giving the copper a drive down the road, and a bribe for 2 quid lol.

Good effort, you're right, we live in old blightey, stiff upper lip and all that, wot! Take this lovely set of points young man and give me 40 pounds while you're at it...mind you it's doubled hasn't it?

[-(

Timmy, when i got pulled over on the M1 the copper asked me if I wanted to watch myself on his video. I declined in case there was a charge for it and took the £40 Fixed Penalty instead.

He said it's a nice day you've got a car capable of doing that speed ok but I have got to do something about it. He was almost apologising.

I had managed to slow down from about 125MPH so he only got me for 106.

Some times you're just lucky.

Jez, you might want to look at the speedtrap bible at www.brakehorsepower.com or do a search for "gatso"

It has info about the speed law, the fines, going to court, solicitors, what to do/say etc. Plus lots of other stuff about speed traps.

Hope it helps.
