Whilst having a sedate drive around silverstone yesterday my power steering died, there had been this whiney-grinding noise coming from the steering for a while and now that noise has stopped but so has my ability to turn.

There's no blown fuses so is there anything else I should check before I go and change the pump?

I boiled my power steering fluid on a track day... I ripped out the speedo convertor and it didn't happen again, thought it might be the pump working overtime on the track as it was over-assisting... may have been a coincedence it didn't happen again tho!! Noise was very prominent, but didn't completely lose steering...

As said, check fluid level first - I assume if you let it get low enough there simply won't be enough volume to maintain pressure; not sure what damage it may hav done tho...

Right, no hicas as it's an NA the fluid is fine and it's still golden colour.

It had been groaning for a while then it started to stick on fast transition from either L to R or R to L. There was no bang or any other indication other than it stopped assisting and now there's no noise.
