about the zed the other day...never noticed it before despite having owned several of these but the key lock solenoid only lets me remove my key when the auto is in park, if you're in neutral it keeps it locked in the barrel

ahh now i knew that one...you have to depress the little stick thing on the rear of the shifter if you want without a key

Exactly!!

 

(I think that - but cannot remember!!) the key on a UK spec still comes out if the shifter is in "N" but I know that you can move the shifter through the gears without the key in the ignition.
