Noticed a whining noise coming from the rear which I've been told coming from my diff.

Noise occurs between 50 ~ 65 mph and can be heard with or without throttle. The noise also doesnt change when rocking the steering.

Is this the sign of a diff on its way out? If so, what are my options? If not, what else could it be?

Cheers

Pete

Have you checked for leaks. UK car has seperate Diff oil cooler and the joins in pipework can leak..leading to low diff fliud...and subsequently noise.

ok i'll check for that but there is nothing on the floor in the garage where it is kept. It is easy enough to check the fluid levels in the diff?

wheel bearing. does it generally happen when cold?

No its all the time dave

Maybe a sagging GB mount or prop bearing donut but then again u said from the rear so maybe not..... sometimes if the diff is touching the lower mounting bracket it will make noise mine has about 1mm clearance.

mine is loud as hell with uprated bushings etc.

Take out the diff filler plug and if some fluid comes out then its full if none comes out then stick you little finger in and see how far down it goes before touching oil. If it needs more oil then top it up till the oil starts to come out that will give you the correct level, If its a dirty colour id drain and change it all anyway.

Mine had like a slight hissing air leak noise comming from near the diff, asked about it on here and they said it was the fuel pump and that the noise was normal.

Pete a little hint...take out the filler plug 1st before you drain the old stuff iff you change the diff oil as finding out you cant undo the filler plug AFTER the old stuff is out can ruin your day:cry:

Its definately not the fuel pump. I know what that sounds like and this gets noisier until around 65mph and then gets quieter.
