Currently I am not happy with my company that I work for. I cant specifically put my finger on one thing but there are lots of little things that are going on that make me feel unsettled.

I have been offered 2 other positions both in the same line of work but with differences to my existing situation.

1/. very good money but will have to work 6 shifts a week without a break for 6 weeks at a time. Then if another opperative is off sick or holidays I will have to cover them. So potentially 13 weeks with out a break. The work is well below my skills level and so I will have no problems there.

2/. about 2/3'rds of the above (take home) just 5 shifts a week I can take as much time off as needed (obviously without pay) the work is a bit more local to home and a lot more interesting and more to my skill level.

My dilemma is: OK the first is much better pay but far far more less interesting and involves a fair bit more travelling and the amount of work I will have to committ to and there isnt any getting out of it by taking days off. Both are nights.

The second job is slightly more pay than I am on now.

So do I chase the pound and go for the better pay or take the less pay and do the more interesting job. I ask because I am really in two minds at the moment. I want to go for the money but something is nagging me not to.

What would you do?

Go for the one you would enjoy mate. I had a good payed job but they took the piss as I hated it there. In the end I could barely bring myself to get out of bed to go there, I lived 8 miles away- my new job is 180 miles away and I work there 3 days and 2 from home. Money has now increased and is better but at 1st it was the same- the difference is now I enjoy the job.

The old firm would have me back tomorrow for probably the pay I earn now but I know within a few weeks I would hate it again and dread going to work, that is the worst feeling.

take the money - get the mortgage paid

my 2p

regards,

alex

both are better than the job i have now. both are very well paid.

Take the one you'd enjoy more not the one you'll hate.

Exactly - after all, both new jobs are better paid than your current one so you will not be financially worse off.

Don't just do it for the money - being happy is more important and remember, you have to work for a big chunk of your life!

How do you define true success? If you do a job you like, get paid well and are truly happy with your lot, then you have been successful.

On the other hand, you could have a job that pays the earth but it's stressful and you hate it. Serious money is no real consolation if you get home tired/miserable/stressed. Despite appearing successful in the eyes of others, material success is not necessarily the route to attaining your true happiness/fulfillment.

Good luck with your new job, whichever one you choose.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Well I must admit I am very grateful for your input all of you. Those words Rich' are the exact way I have been feeling for the last 5 months or so. They explain the way my life seems to have gone.Thats why the change is imminent. My boss wont see it because he cant see beyond the profit. OK thats why he does what he does but use and abuse along the way just dont work for me.

i would like to say though that niether of the new jobs are as near stressful as my present job. the choice would be easy otherwise.

£1200 or £800 pw. see. not easy is it?

Good position to be in on all counts, which means your skills are in demand and there are probably more jobs similar if you looked hard enough...I'd personally take the second and learn more skills. Use the additional spare time to set up on your own, and/or do additional work if you need more cash to fund your lifestyle.... Money isn't everything and a balance and time to rest and think has alot going for it! Belive me i know! I did two years contracting working away from home and earning 3 times what i'm on now, but had no life and came home at weekends (worked a few too!) to simply eat, sleep and recover then away again Sunday night or 5am mondays....Granted it paid for a second house but i've now taken a second option like you and am home every night and able to work on the car and do jobs on teh other house!

If the first is what you need to do for money then do that, to get out of a hole or build up the cash, but set your goals again to get out after a period and look for another option 2.

Richards words are also spot on...

very good advice Richard...more money is never enough because you just increase the spending to keep par and end up back where you started but with more items of wealth that cost more:headvswal;)

cheers bud. i work within the railway industry so no chance of being my own boss short of being self employed and both jobs are that.

I just had a nose to see what you did! PLC's? Electronics...Don't forget you've probably got a wealth of knowledge that would be snapped up by other industries. getting others to work for you and subbing stuff is another option for the future then, but you don't get time to think about that, chasing your tail constantly, and as someone else just said you also spend more....even things like making your own lunch and having the time to do so of a morning, rather than living out of a bag in digs or hotel rooms mon to friday makes a big difference to your lifestyle and spending!!!

Things have a way of working themselves out, but dont forget about yourself when chasing the money!!

best of luck bud.

hi vini, take the 2nd and give me the 1st one, i need a job that pays simiar to that.

as you have a family second one seems better. but 400 a week is a big difference.
