this light came on yesterday- its the one in the dial binacle near the 'door open' light rather than lower down.

only came on for a second or so when starting- I've checked the oil level which seems ok ( am never confident because of the design of the dipstick).

Any thoughts on this as never seen it on before?

Put this in the help thread buddy, people will be able to help you there! :)

most odd, ive never seen that "check oil" light, does anyone know what oil its actually referring too?

Or do you mean the oil can symbol?

Just had a look through a UK/Euro handbook and the only warning lights to feature the word "oil" are "mission oil" (which is for manual transmission oil @ high temperature) and "diff oil" which is for the diff temperature and level i think.

I don't recollect there being one, at least not on the earlier cars. Maybe it's the Check engine (eg ECU) light.

thanks for comments guys- the light was in the six section row immediately below the water temp gauge. From left its the Charge warning light first then the oil light was in one of the next two. is there any way of lighting all the warning lights in a 'test' mode??

Light hasn't been on since BTW!!

The one next to the Charge warning light is the "light" symbol, which indicated that you have a rear bulb failure.

The one next to that is the Cat overheat light, which indicates that unburt fuel is igniting in the exhaust becuase the car is severly overfuelling..most likely due to a failing coilpack connection or PTU failure.

As you've only seen it once, its likely its the Cat overheat light you have seen as the fault is usually very intermittent.

thanks very much for all the info- mine is a series 1 so it must have been either brake warning or cat warning- was only briefly on start-up so will have to keep an eye out.
